Hello everyone. I have been browsing these fourms for a couple of days now, and I must say I love it. I have recently purchased a 240, and have a little story to share with everyone. I recently bought a 1991 240SX F.B. I am only 17 and I had a $2,000 limit to find a car. I found the car from a mechanic. It had ac, no apperant leaks, and started up fine. The hood had some minor dents in it, but those will soon be fixed hopefully, and the stock spoiler was loose. The car had been in an acciddent, however, the guy had replaced the driver's side fender and headlight. The dash has some nasty cracks in it, but easily fixible. This car was amazing, and I bought it for $1,500. The second day I had it, the ac went out. The car started to over heat a day later. I looked at the spoiler, and it had gotten worse since we first bought it, and there was a nice big rust hole on the hatch/trunk under the spoiler. The drivers side tire went flat, and the brakes were making a terrible noise. I filled the tire up with fix-a-flat and drove it into my auto tech class to check it out. We found that it had an oil leak at the front crankshaft seal, and overtime, it had coated the lower front of the engine in oil and dirt. Needless to say I was not pleased. However, I am in auto tech, and fixing cars is what we do. We are still curently working on it in my class (we fixed the oil leak, changed the water pump, and will start looking at the brakes and getting some new tires next week.) You can expect me to be posting later on in these forums, because this car is far from the way I want it to be. I just wanted to say hello to everyone, and introduce myself. I plan to keep my car, because 240's are not to common were I live, and the car has lots of potential. Despite all toe problems so far, I love my 240. I will post pictures soon, and you can all see my P-O-S car, lol. Okay, well have a nice day everyone.

don't worry, they all seem like easy fixes (except maybe for the overheating) if perhaps the ac compresor seized this could have caused it.

Seal is easy to fix but time consuming.Hatch is usually replaced or bondoed if damage is smalltire, well c'mon..

Your lucky your in auto tech class. You get to work on it. But what do you expect from a '91? They're good cars, but the overheating problem can be a biatch. I have a '91 (needs a motor) also. As for the spoiler, I think most hatchback 240's have that rusting & loose spoiler problem. Getting mine changed on Thursday(Yayy). Only thing is, my '91 is going to have a maroon hatch, a light blue rear bumper. Man that's going to look real shi**y. But at least no more leaks in the trunk. When yours is up and running like you want it, you'll love it. Enjoy your 240!! And welcome to NICO!

Wecome to NICO. Sorry to hear about all the early problems, but seems like you'll be able to get them fixed without to much trouble. Enjoy the car, and enjoy the boards

How difficult was it to change that front Seal? My 92 is leaking oil too, at a rate of about a quart a month. I heard that the front crank seal is a common problem on these cars.

Are there any how to guides on it? In any case, welcome to the club. I wish we even had an auto tech class in highschool. They replaced it with computer labs I think.

It's ok, I overpaid for my 95, luckily it is mechanically sound, just needs some body work. That's pretty cool though, that you get to work on your car in class. Good stuff.

Hey, yeah luckily the problems I have encountered so far have been fairly easy fixes (and yes I am very lucky to be able to work on it on auto tech, it helps alot.) dfw240_EE, changing the front oil seal is really easy, just time consuming. All you got to do is take off the fan shroud, etc. and remove the fan and belts. Then remove the crankshaft pully and there's your seal. The seal cost me $15, and came as a kit. Its really easy to do. I dont know of any giudes, but I hope this helps out a bit. As for the overheating, that has yet to be determind if it is fixed but...once we changed the seal we let it sit for the rest of the day, and the next day there was coolant on the floor. We checked to see were it was common from and did a preassure test. It was comming from the water pump, we replaced it and no more leak. I am hoping that was what was causing the over-heating, because when we drained the radiator there was not a ton of coolant in it so we will see. From what I have read, base9se, your right about all of the F.B's having rust problems. The holes are pretty big, well once you file the rust away it will be, so I am keeping an eye out for any hatches, color is my last worry, lol, and I am glad your were able to find one for your car. Well i gotta go cause I am in 5th period and the teacher is coming by to grade our projects, so take care all.

Have you tried replacing the sending unit? That was the problem with my 93 HB, it was bad, causing it to "overheat." After that the car ran fine, still does :-)

Fortunately my FB did NOT come with a spoiler. Or power windows, or power lucks, or power mirrors, or cruise control. It's about as base as you could ask for.

Hey everyone! I didnt expect many people to actually post anything, but this is awsome. I just wanted to let you all know that we put all of parts back together, checked/changed fluid, etc and started the car up. It runs! We let it run for a bit, and so far no leaks, and no signs of it over heating! I am very happy. I am going today to pick up some new tires, so once those are on, I will take it home and pst some pictures of it. Eventually we will fix the a/c on it, but that will be saved for a later day. All that is left now is some exterior work, and luckily a kid in my class is going to try and hook me up with a hatch, and possibly a hood and dash, so I am extremly excited about that (he races A LOT so he knows alot of people. Infact, I am getting the tires from one of his friends for $47 each, and they arn't carppy ones either.) So far things are looking pretty good, and I cant wait to get my car back. Driving my standard 240sx is so much better than my moms automatic Civic :-) Anyway I have to go back to work (well, school work that is) so have an awsome day everyone.

Sinatrix... I've had overheating problems before. I've changed my thermostat, rad cap, water pump, to no avail, it'll be fine at idle but once I put load on the engine, it overheats like a mofo. I then took off the radiator to get it replaced. Guess what, I found two dead birds and so much dirt and dust in the front of the radiator (between the ac condenser and the radiator) that there was no possibility any air is flowing through the radiator. Check that. I'm sure, more then likely that'll be your over heating problem... unless you have a bad head gasket... Well, regardless, good luck with your car, my hatch was bad as well, I just cut the rust off with a grinder and bought some sheet metal to cover it, then welded it on and bondo it up. Turned out pretty well.

front crank seal is a common leak spot. I have a pinhole leak on mine. I don't lose any oil thankfully, but it's made a mess all over the bottom of the engine that i had steam cleaned last year. so i'm going to have that adressed soon.
