Learn some english. Thanks.

-Disgruntled Neighbor.

Somewhat humorous anecdote:

I'm sitting at the counter putting a AEM EMS and Greddy EVO exhaust for a 300zxTT on order from our suppliers when the phone rings.

"******* motorsports, Chris Speaking.""Ello?""Hello.""Uh... I call fer da eentek fer do dosand doz nein.""Pardon me?""Eentek."I think to myself... what the crap have I ordered lately that sounds like an "eentek?" Oh that's right, it was a 2000 Dodge Neon INTAKE. So I look behind me with all the new stuff that just came in. Then I realize that I told him it'd be here on Saturday and it's only Thursday. "Oh, I'm sorry. It's not going to be here until Saturday."*click*

He didn't even say thanks or goodbye. He just hung up the phone. I can't stand the fact that there are people who have been here for GENERATIONS and still have yet to put any effort to learn english. I'm the second generation of my family being here in America and I speak damn near perfect english.

And if you dont' want to learn english, at least be polite and say good bye or thanks. Geez.

Carry on.

Welcome to California. It's so hard for some people to make a living here already that learning english just isn't so important.

sure this person isn't a recent immigrant?

My dad, immigrant, is just really pissed of at the English language. And I dont blame him, everything is backwards in spanish. Sometimes he gets the words in english backwards. Even though my parents have been in the US for over 2 decades, he still has trouble pronouncing names and words. Like Wesley Snipes name, hell say it like "Sne-pes." Im like "NOOO , its snIpes. jeez"! My mom on the other hand, knows english a lot better. It's just not as easy learning a new language as an adult.

Learning English is important, if they want to amount to something. The ones who don't speak it usually don't get very far.

ya its pretty hard for recent immingrants to learn english, because they work so hard just to make a living and be able to buy a house or whatever that they don't have time to learn the language. I came here when i was 8, and it only took me a few years to learn the language but it's a lot easier for kids than for adults. I've also seen how hard my parents have worked to get to the point in life where they are today, and when they first got here they've dedicated a lot of hardwork and time to make sure that me and my brother have a good life, and i really respect them for that, and when they first got here i don't think they've honestly had any time to take an english class or anything

uhh...i'm second generation to this country, and the only time people mistake me as a foreigner is when i pretend to be one...

i've never had an accent and i never will..when kids who are second generation say "i speak damn near perfect english" it means they're ****ing retarded for not speaking perfect english...second generation means they were born and raised here

As much as I agree with your opinion (I truly do agree in part), the simple fact of the matter is that these illegals are taking jobs that the rest of us won't take for that price. They are not taking jobs away from us really. Would you want to fold laundry or pick cabbage for $5 a day? They are helping the economy more than they are hurting it. The cheap labor keeps prices on the final product down... and this is only offset by the very small impact resulting from a handful of "us" not having those jobs.

But, I do see the danger involved with our drastically sub-standard border security. If honest hardworking (illegal) Mexicans can walk across the border by the thousands every day... it stands to reason that so can terrorists who intend to do us harm.

My sollution is a hybrid of Bush's plan and that of the rest of our party. CLOSE THE BORDERS TIGHT... and then let the illegals who are already here have the crap-tastic jobs that we don't want.

It's not like having a really tight border is all of a sudden going to stop terrorism. People need to realize, if they're that intent on killing people, they're going to do it. A fence isn't going to stop them. I also think that they aren't taking the jobs we care about, cleaning toilets sucks, it's not something you want to do for really low pay. I'd rather they did it, they seem to enjoy it. I also don't really care if people don't speak english, unless they work in a job that requires them to speak with other people (cashier at fast food) or they speak a foreign language and expect me to understand it when they want something. Though usually I see their kids speaking for them, which doesn't bother me. I suck at foreign languages so I don't really expect anybody else to learn one that's even older than I am. However, I don't think we should have multiple national languages. They want spanish spoken more, go back to mexico, or florida)

A lot of illegal immigrants take jobs that a lot of us Americans have "too much pride" to take. Like blowing leaves, fast food resturants, etc. What I see from illegal immigrants is what a lot of people want ALL Americans to be like. You see foreign families able to work together in buying a house, yes maybe there would be 10-15 people living there but everybody works together to contribute. They just come here for freedom and opportunity.

A while back I had a Mexican kid come in to our lot and want to buy a Ford Explorer Sport from us. He had no social security number and of course no credit, so after he figured out he couldn't get a loan. He comes back hours later with all of his COWORKERS and they go down the line until one qualifies for a loan. The qualifier put the car in his name and the kid now makes payments to his coworker. Now I can't tell you how many Americans come to me and can't even get their own mother to do something like that.

They stick together. They don't get all materialistic, and nothing is competition. It's all hard work and family devotion.

BTW That was a very ignorant thing to say.

ok i don't know who that was intended for but if it was for me, well then just to let you know my everyone in my family is an American citizen (kinda hard to do that if we were illegal immigrants now wouldn't it).

and like people stated before, you think an illegal immigrant without a social security number can get a good paying job, if so then name one. and if you have a job that requires skill then what are you worried about, some illegal immigrant isn't going to take it from you.

This kind of thinking is the inherent problem with "liberal" thinking.

I try to reason and argue as a pragmatist. You are being an idealist. I NEVER said I was above anybody or too good for any job. But the REALITY of the situation is that THEY ARE TAKING THOSE JOBS. That is REALLY what's happening. I did not make this up or pretend to be better than anybody. The truth of it is that WE are born into privilege. My education makes me above that job. It would be a waste of my resources and all of those who contributed resources to me (student loans etc.) for me to scrub toilets for a living. The illegals are WILLING to do that job and that is a FACT. Stop trying to reason your way through things thinking idealistically and think practically.

Nobody is above anything... it just isn't practical or efficient for a Harvard MBA to wash bathroom tile. Resource management applies on all levels.

Back on topic, English is an incredibly difficult language to learn.

Linguists (and non-English speakers) will tell you that what we use everyday is a messed-up language.

It is a compilation of so many styles, inflections, dialects and slang (that aren't present in most other languages) that it's almost impossible to learn beyond adolescence without betraying one's native tongue when speaking.

Great point about the car purchase. A house on my street is owned by not one, not two, not three, not four... but SEVEN Hispanic guys who all work as landscapers (for three different companies). They had to put almost HALF the purchase price down, and paid WAY too much for its value, but now they have a roof over their heads, a safe place to park their trucks and trailers, and are reaping the benefits of homeownership and capitalism in the good ol' USA.

I would disagree with you on that. I think that the english language is alot easier to pick up then any other foreign language that I had come to contact with. I picked up the language quite fast and I was fluent within 2 years. Ofcourse I was only 10 and realize that kids pick up languages like crack addicts blaze the pipes. I have retained my native language and opted to learn a 3rd one. It's alot harder then I thought once you get older but still not possible. And one more fact about the engish language is that the english language is backwards of almost every other language.

Quiet, dont say the L word. The thread might get locked

I understand whats happening. But illegal immigrants arent taking these jobs, we're giving them these jobs. As you said, our education system is too superior for us to do them. I agree we are born into privilege. But ask yourself why. We are only privileged because someone else is disadvantaged.

We NEED people to work these jobs. Nobody wants to scrub toilets or pick cabbage for $5/day. Illegal immigrants dont want to either. They do it so their children can be born into the same 'privileged' atmosphere we were born in. And because they cant walk into a corporate job and find employment.

And your education doesnt make you above anything. You simply have the means to earn more money to support your family and ensure they have more privileges than you had. If we all got our MBA from Harvard, there would be too many dirty toilets.

Greg's here...time for me to go...

Man, I was getting worried about how people were treating that comment untill I realized that some people actually had brains. We need to treat people as what they are... people. How does an imaginary boundary give the right to treat other humans differently? ALso, if Americans get so upset about 'their jobs being taken,' why aren't they upset about TNCs(transnational corporations). They just do they opposite...they take their business and let people from other countries do the work in horrible conditions for **** pay and the TNC basically control their communities for the worse. It's the biggest exploitation scheme ever. I wish that American companies would keep their jobs in America so it could help the economy. Talk to people from Flint, MIchigan who had their jobs taken away and moved to Mexico. I don't think that immagrants picking beans hurt as much as NIke having shoes built in Thailand or wherever. TNCs are the ones who STEAL American jobs. You should HATE THEM......SCREW this I'm goin' to listen to some rage.

[[/QUOTE]

Guys, we gotta wake up. Those imaginary lines we call borders arent what they used to be. We're all in this together...

Modified by IWannaS15 at 4:39 PM 12/17/2004

But we're <not> in this together.

The planet has tons more people than can be fed, clothed, and housed on our fossil fuels indefiently.Oil is food and clotehs and medicine and housing and its being used up, humanity has used up half of all oil ever found and all the new finds are all small...

In 50 years oil wont be traded all that easily anymore and it will be <expensive>.Every country is a survival island of sorts!

What we should do is, try to think way of lowering the US population to make our resources last longer.

We are one of only a couple countries that have enough reseverses of most anything, to maintain a technological civilization for centuries.

We are one of them.We also have the largest coal reserves in the world, those can serve as an oil subsitiute for centuries.

What we are doing in letting PPL in, we are creating a population that whenever the crunch hits, will be much much larger than it would have been with a zero immigration policy

To the detriment of all current citizens.

A country has the responsibility of looking after its citizens (actual+current)

Allowing immigration may enable a short term (or even medium term)increase in standard of living for our citizens but the rpice is too high.

paying $2 for a box of strawberries vs $6 simply is worth it.The main empoleer for immigrants illegal or otehrwise is agruculture .

This country makes a great life boat for 250 million, a passable lifelboat for 300 million but not much of a lifeboat at all for 500 million.

Immigration will bring this countries population up to 500 million in 100 years with the descendants of current citizens making up only fraction.

I'd rather spend double or triple on food and construction costs and know my grand chuildren will live in a country of 260-300 million than in one of 520 million with half only half the resources to survive as a result.

Its not a matter of being nice or open minded, its matter of a decent life for our grand kids.

We need zero immigration yesterday.

As well as deportations of all illegals and all who have gained citizenship thru immigration fraud .

This can bring our population down to 260 million (its now much higher) and all further increase should be natural increase with zero immigration effect. Will this be inconvinint?Drive up housing and food rpices due to more expensive labor being needed and ofte not there?Yes but it will be worth it.

Only expcetions that are worth it, are maybe a couple dozen ultra-high performing world renowned scientists with their families ( and immediate families only)

Anything more just isn't worth long term horror of having to share scarce resources to the point of starvation.

In 2100 we could be the only country were the trains still run, the lights are still on, and people dont go hungry but <only> we we enact and enforce zero immigration now.

Fred..

PS: I know it wont happen,..due to their scientific illiteracy our ruling elites are too short sighted and feel rising populations wont effect them, or not effect them enough, to make up to the feel-good effect of cheaper labor for current voters to enjoy.
