Well I guess I should introduce my self seeing as its my first post here and all.I'm Tosh I'm from Olympia, WAHi.I'm looking into doing a KA24DET project, I don't know if I'm just silly or what but I don't really have a HP goal (yet). I do on the other hand have a PSI goal, I would like to reach 20psi. I guess I should give my car info now huh ? its a 1989 240sx with a 1993 DE swap what can I say I love piggies. Everyone around me is doing SR and RB swaps so I have cheep s13 and s14 KA's around my area.

Well here are some of my newbie questions for ya I tried to search for this stuff but I might not of been searching for the right stuff or I might just be dumb.

First is there that big of a difference between the s14 ka and the s13 from what looking into it I've done it looks like they produce about the same amount of HP and torque is one better for my 20psi goal or would the s14 swap not even be worth my time at this point ?

Second I've been trying to wrap my brain around the whole its not psi that hurts engines its horsepower thing blows them. As far as I can tell a stock KA won't last long running 20psi. Besides a rebuild on the engine what all should be upgraded to accommodate the boost or rather the horsepower that's going to be caused by that amount of boost.

Thanks in advance for your help.Tosh

why a PSI goal???

My truck makes 26 psi stock, and only about 430 hp (wth some electronics)

PSI is a by product.

A torque goal, or HP goal, or ET time, something performance based makes much more sense.

If you're that interested in seeing your boost gauge say 20 psi, I'm sure a silk screener can hook you up without ever even installing a turbo.

What is 20 psi intended to buy you?

Are you trying to get out of the hole in a corner faster, or get off the line at the strip, or carry through fifth on the highway with taller tires, or what?

I'd get a good performance goal in mind, then design your system around it... for instance, beat a C5 vette through a 45 ft radius hairpin

I'd wager that VERY FEW people who THINK they want 20 lbs of boost (on ANY Nissan engine) have never driven a Nissan with 10 lbs.

You're talking about a car that will be incredibly sketchy at full boost.

A hp goal makes MUCH more sense. Actually, for that matter, a 1/4-mi goal does as well.

Only thing S14 engines have up on S13 engines (the DE series) are they usually have less mileage - if you were going to do a rebuild, it wouldn't matter whatsoever then - as far as I can recall at least.

Forgetting about the whole engine rebuild - you'd need to look into re-doing your cooling (intercooler, upgraded fans and radiator) all fuel support mods (bigger injectors, better fuel pump), tuning (Safc), a re-tuned ECU is a good way to do things too (does great tuning, and regulates fuel well too) - pricey, but helps out alot of crap. Upgraded MAF, exhaust system, all the piping for your intercooler and to run your turbo, turbo, turbo manifold, an upgraded clutch/flywheel (to hold the power you are making), boost/temp guages (so you know what's going on), boost controller , and brakes (if you start pushing higher hp, you'll start going faster alot faster, and you'll want to make sure you can still stop good). Of course this is pretty much a fully done car, if you were going for alot of HP, it's alot of stuff you'd need to be doing stuff safely. Of course if you are shooting for a lower hp goal, you won't need everything listed here - basics are the turbo, all the piping, manifold, exhaust system, upgraded fuel system, upgraded cooling system, and some way to tune it (SAFC).

Finally - definitley don't go with your "20 psi" goal imo. HP is where it's at, and from the HP goals you want to make - you'll be able to judge exactly what will all be needed to be boughten, done, and how much you're looking at spending.

I'm kind of a n00b to all this stuff too, but I think I pretty much listed off what you want to know accuratley - give or take some information.

There will be others that will be able to elaborate MUCH more than I - AZ,Fiznat, WD, and Structure come to mind right away - they've helped me out ALOT when it comes to my car.

Oh - and welcome to NICO

i think u should also plan out a budget while ur deciding on your HP goal. 20 psi isnt cheap unless ur talking about tire pressure. And twenty psi from any decent sized turbo should net you over 400whp. Is this car going to be a daily driver? Do you autocross? What do you intend to do with the car? Answer some of those questions so we can get you headed in the right direction. Welcome to NICO.
