First time owner! And also, a first time member of a forum! So, please bare with me while I get used to how things work here. With that being said....

I bought a 91 240sx. I knew when I got it, it needed some work(head job, motor/transmission mounts, etc.). When i took the intake off, I noticed these butterfly flaps, on a rail that is supposed to be vacuum operated. I'm just not sure what they're there for. Is this like the TVIS system on toyota's 4a motors?

Well, I tried to post a picture of it, but apparently, I don't have that skill yet....

Can't remember what they are called, but they are supposed to help with low rpm response.

I think there's a removal DIY in the tech section.

Well, if it helps with low rpm response, I think I'd like to try and keep it in there. Unless it's too much of a headache to keep around when i start to do the EGR delete.

Swirl control valve.

I'd keep 'em, unless you're sticking in milder cams.

I would find them useless. Does it require the head to be off?

You don't need to remove the head to get to these, if that's what you're asking.

I took mine out. Lost a little low end ( shifting from 2nd -3rd around 2k-3.5k its a little laggy) but you can defintly feel more top end pull through 4th and some of 5th.

But that could just be my clutch slipping in 3rd...

Just say no to pulls under a 60 and you will be good. ;)

Ah ok, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks again for all the info guys!

Also, if I run a set of stage 2 BC cams, would I need to replace the stock exhaust manifold? It looks like a well set up EM for stock And I'm not going to be doing anything else in the name of performance to this motor. My exhaust cam is bad, so I'm considering changing to the stage 2s.
