After over a year of driving my car, these are my observations about the transmission of my car, and possibly other Gs with manual transmission.
1. The 3rd gear, while it has some serious torque, it is the most inefficient gear under WOT because it consumes more gas than any other gear for the power it produces. If you can, avoid its use under WOT if you want to save gas---quickly go from 2 to 3 (quickly) and then to 4. I actually see my gas gauge move under WOT in 3rd gear. And what is even more annoying about the 3rd gear is that it tops out at 90 miles per hour. If there is ever a reason to replace any gear in the transmission, the 3rd gear, in my opinion would be the first to go.
2. My fifth gear has impressive torque only above 1** miles per hour. 4th gear is the best in torque but it starts stressing when it reaches 1** miles per hour, but still works well at over 1** miles per hour.
3. When stopped at a traffic light, avoid depressing the clutch---let it out and leave the gear in neutral. I know this is hard to do and asking too much of anyone as even i want to take off immediately when the traffic light turns green. But what i have found out is that since our engines are high compression engines 10.3: 1 ( I am not very sure about this ratio), it produces a little more heat than a regular low compression engine. What this does is that when you stop at a traffic light, while depressing your clutch in anticipation of taking off, the heat generated from the engine may tend to slowly dry out the grease in your throw out bearing, eventually leading to a tougher clutch pedal to depress, in time.
These are just my observations and 2 cents so far. Of course, these assertions are based me driving a 2007 G-35 Coupe 6MT with some modifications such as a pop charger, spacer, mrevv2, and Stillen Cat back exhaust. I assumed the sedans would be the same with modifications, however, their lighter weight may make this phenomenon less obvious than in the coupes.
