Hi'

Im doing research on a possible swap, my candidates are RB20/25 or blacktop SR20...(please no flaming.. non turbo...why? due to my driving/life style. I dont need the extra horsepower, and seems to be a cheaper option (reason I will go to an RB even do comes with a turbo...) when one is available from a supplier online. I tried to search for info on the non turbo models to no avail. I never owned a turbo car, not looking forward to the extra parts ($$$) and maintenance.

Questions:

What are the years for the non turbo models??Whats the story on these?? Any significant changes when compared to turbo ones?? I know compression, and extra hardware changes but wondering about deep inside the engine...Do they come with red or black tops??? The ones I seen are have non color valve covers... Oh, last one...how easy it will be to upgrade to a turbo later down the road?? if needed.. (resale value related question)

thanks, guys...

If you've never owned a turbocharged vehicle you can't make a fair opinion.

If you're even thinking about boosting in the future (which you obviously are), don't get a n/a SR.

Stick with your KA.

To answer your questions, afaik n/a SR's don't come w/ oil squirters and NEO SR's come with roller rockers and vvl. I don't think S-chassis came w/ neo sr's though although I was informed by an engine importer years ago that s15 verts or something did. Anway, I think all the s-chassis ones have silver valve covers.

As for future turbo upgrades, oil sqiurters woulb be a good idea as would lower compression pistons, and turbo cams. It's "easy" to turbocharge anything.

Oh, and stick with your KA.

thanks, you are right on the type S.... after doing more research I learned that the type x was the stockish of all 180,s.... therefore came with the non turbo SR20....

thanks for the info....I might have to try a turbo car for a better assesment before I make a final decision....

Huh? I never said anything about a Type - S. I said S-chassis meaning encompassing all S-cars (such as S13's, s14's, S15's).

And a Type-x 180sx had a SR20det along with body panels a spoiler...they were the top of the line 180sx, not the lowest.

SR20DE's came in S13's, S14's and S15's.

The S13 Silvia got the SR20DE from 1991-1994. The RPS13 180SX got SR20DE's from 1996-1998. All the S13 SR20DE's had the same imternals/compression.

The S14 SR20DE was released in late 1993 through 1998. It came with VTC.

The S15 SR20DE came with SR20DE's from 1999-2002. The Convertables didnt get special engines, they just all got SR20DE's, no turbos. There is a special S15 SR20DE called the Autech edition that came with about 200 NA HP. It has a red valve cover, while every other SR20DE has a silver valve cover.

Ah yeah, that's where I got confused. There are various Autech editions throughout the years...one of which was a vert (although it did not come with the red sr20de). That was the Otech S15 tuned by Autech here:http://www.autech.co.jp/HISTOR...x.htm

Sorry for my confusion.
