Hi fellow NICO members...I have a '98 Pathfinder that i bought a couple months ago and noticed it had a crack in the MAF sensor about the size of your ring finger fingernail, I was wondering if that has any effect on the vehicle or not. I also had a "check engine soon" light come on after putting gas in the tank and air in the tires. The light didn't come on right away until after about 15 miles. The codes are 1440 and 1444. Something about a leak in the EVAP system. I had a Ranger that did that a lot if the gas cap wasn't put back on properly by the attendant, so i was wondering if this is the same thing. One more thing is my idle will sometimes sit at 850rpms after warmed up and sometimes at 750 but never above 850, is that normal? I just put in Injector cleaner in my latest fill up. Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

If it was just a failed gas cap you still going to need to run @150 miles for the ecu to recheck enough to reset the light on its own.

If the crack is as small as that. A bead of rtv should be able to seal it if you clean the surface of the crack well. Any bit of un-metered air is bad..

Thanks Slumpert, It was the charcoal canister, i guess it's coming apart and flooding the line with little bits of charcoal and a piece must have jammed the valve open. I ended up tapping the valve until it was free, then i put a fuel filter in the line to catch the bits and prevent them from jamming the valve again and throwing the 1444 code.

It is crazy how much carbon is gonna work its way to the filter you installed.

If you bought a clear one, please post a photo like 1000 miles from now. Btw do not bother to replace it. Even when fully packed it wont make a difference since it wont get past the filter anymore.
