I'm sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but is the oil pump gear on the crank shaft turned via the pressure from the crank pulley? And would oil on the threads of my head bolts and valve chain cover bolts signify a crack somewhere letting oil in, or merely a bad gasket? I have two motors I am trying to diagnose and get into the car as soon as possible :gapteeth:

have you ever disassembled and engine before...or for that matter know how an engine works?

No carl I haven't ever fully disassembled an engine. I do know know how a motor works, but wankel engines still seem to be powered by black magic to me. I posted hoping for some help on my project from people more experienced than me with the VH. Please GTFO.

Telling Carl to "GTFO" ain't to bright. He's a prety knowledgeble guy when it comes to VH's. I think you took his comment the wrong way. There's no black magic here, as a VH is certainly not a Wankel.

If he is indeed knowledgeable then I would love for him to share. The motor in question ate all of its plastic chain guides, and I am trying to diagnose if the block is any good or not. I understand my questions may be below most VH forum members' levels of knowledge, especially pertaining to the VH45DE, but I don't believe it was necessary to question my broader knowledge of internal combustion engines when I am very knowledgeable with my Miata's B6 engine. I don't want to start any altercations, I am just trying to get some answers to my predicament.

Is the miata's engine a wankel too?

You wont fit two motors into your car. Give up now.

^^^ Not true!!! You could always buckle one into your passenger seat!

Anyway, the key stock on the crank is only for the timing chain gears. The oil chain gear is turned under pressure. Also, the valve and front cover's groove machined into the flange do not encompass the bolt holes. So the make a gasket sealer creates a barrier before the bolts and therefore they shouldn't have oil on them. If you were able to pull them off cleanly then you should be able to tell if the gaskets were bust. A tell tale sign of oil gunk on the outside of the case would most likely be there as well. And if you clean them off the oil should have left a stain on the metal face, which is a pretty good way to tell at what point the seal kept the oil at bay. It could possibly be a crack somewhere, but that should be obvious if the case. And if it were, it should only affect those in the same proximity. Was every bolt oily? Maybe some spilt oil seeped down into some of the bolt holes at some point? Idk

Don't crush my dreams...

Thanks fluffy, that is what I figured for the oil pump. Both engines have a healthy supply of exterior oil. I am worried about a crack, but if you say it will be obvious then I will keep moving forward. 1 or 2 of the lower chain cover bolts were coated with oil on my 94 motor, but so is the lower half of the motor due to a leaking oil pan I believe. Thanks for the advice fluffy.

if you have oil on the head bolts its normal...especially when there are feeds thru the head bolts.
inevitably when you remove the head bolts they get oily from oil in the heads.
