^^^ Not true!!! You could always buckle one into your passenger seat!
Anyway, the key stock on the crank is only for the timing chain gears. The oil chain gear is turned under pressure. Also, the valve and front cover's groove machined into the flange do not encompass the bolt holes. So the make a gasket sealer creates a barrier before the bolts and therefore they shouldn't have oil on them. If you were able to pull them off cleanly then you should be able to tell if the gaskets were bust. A tell tale sign of oil gunk on the outside of the case would most likely be there as well. And if you clean them off the oil should have left a stain on the metal face, which is a pretty good way to tell at what point the seal kept the oil at bay. It could possibly be a crack somewhere, but that should be obvious if the case. And if it were, it should only affect those in the same proximity. Was every bolt oily? Maybe some spilt oil seeped down into some of the bolt holes at some point? Idk
