I just recently bought a 1992 240SX FASTBACK SE, and i have a few questions about it. If you can help, then that would be great.

 1. The car idles real badly when the A/C is NOT on. When the A/C is NOT on the needle bounces back and forth from 500RPM to 1000RPM. When the A/C IS on, it idles with no problems at 1000RPM. Can anyone make sense of this?

 2. I have never owned a 240sx before, and i was curious, even though the car is in gear (M/T) does your shifter have alot of play in it, left to right? Mine sure does.

 3. What is the easiest way, to find out if my car has Hicas, super Hicas, or no hicas at all? I got underneath the rear end, and was looking but wasnt for sure what to look for.

Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated :)

ThanksDanny

1) I point you to the search button. Search for "bad idle, hesitation, bogging and etc" The reason I mention these words there a few things that can be wrong. Vacuum issue, idle screw, MAF and etc. Most of those related to idling issues and etc have a list of things to check and can help to narrow the cause down.

2) I own a 92 Coupe. Though I dont know your defintion of "alot". I find my rather comfortable and well weighted. Perhaps yours is far more worn than mine. I would like a shorter throw.

3) If you know what a tie rod looks like it will be easily identifiable. Looking at the service manual. It bolts to the rear toe link. You should see a shaft extending past the rear tower and in towards the subframe into a cylinder (rack).

The rods look similar to this (These are front tie-rods):

1) there are lots of things you can check out do a search, thats the best way for you to find solutions to your idle problem, it's all a process of elimnation when it comes to idle problems.

2) mine does i don't know if thats normal or not though

3) i have a 1991 Super HICAS edition, next to the button to activate the rear-glass wiper there is a little hicas warning light, on the sides of the car there will be a stickers that say Super HICAS, i beleive there is a way to check using the vin but i don't know how.

ok does your car shake at idle, mine did and you said something about the shift knob, yeah mine shook a lot, like uncontrollably. i fixed my problem by raising the idle screw and checking all vaccum lines, i had one split(one from the intake to the valve cover) i wrapped it in eletrical tape but i got a $60 dollar intake off ebay and solved that problem, other than that it stopped without really adjusting or fixing anything, but hasnt done it since
