I drove the car to Atlanta this weekend, and I must say Im loving it. There were a few issues though, so check it out:

First off, I blew another heater hose and ended up with no coolant and an overheating car. I was only like 10 minutes from home though, so I tow strapped it to a friends house and fixed it. It turned out to be the small, 2 inch hose that conneects the lower heater hose to the block, the heater hose crimped and the pressure on that small hose was too much.

I got pretty good gas mileage on the highway, but Im boosting pretty much constantly if Im on the gas, even in 5th gear and only goin maybe 75. Its not a huge deal, Im just worried about undo wear on my turbo. Is this normal? Id tell you the RPM's but I dont have a tach

My idle is kinda rough, like it will be good for about 6-7 seconds then act like its dying for a second, then go back to normal. Happens pretty much all the time, and Im wondering if it is my atmospheric BOV thats doing it, although I dont know why it would at idle.

My car was running pretty hot today, but I didnt see any new coolant leaks. It was just after a little go-fast session, and when I got home I looked down and my temp needle was about 1 line from the top on the S13 cluster. I let it idle for a bit to cycle my turbo, which cooled it down a tad, then cut it off and Im letting it cool down right now. Ill check on it a little later and see whats up.

Any info would be awesome.

it probably IS your atmospheric BOV, when you let metered air leave the system, the ECU puts too much fuel in the engine, also if its not tight enough, it may be opening at idle, letting EVEN MORE metered air out.

Are you using the RB25 temp sensor, or the KA sensor. If you use the RB sensor it will wend a signal that is different than the KA gauges are looking for. They are interchangable so swpa them out and see what hapens there.

Where is the temp sensor located? If its not on the lower harness, then I used the RB unit. It seemed fine for the first few days, stayed pegged at halfway and stayed there for days. Just lately (well, today) it has been acting up.

I let my car cool down and went for about an hour drive. It was totally fine for the first 45 minutes or so, then started climbing again. I parked and let it idle, which brought it down some, but as soon as I started driving again it shot up and stayed at one line under the H.

Is there a chance my thermostat is sticking closed??

I would also like to know where the temp sensor is. I thought it was the last sensor before the upper radiator hose (rubber) begins. But the ka one that was inline in the lower radiator hose is larger...

I believe the temp sensor is on the upper coolant inlet, at least on the rb25.

is it where the rad hose makes the L and goes into the manifold?

not sure. Im thinkin its a bubble in the coolant, cuz it only hapens after awhile. It also might be a bad thermostat. Imma check em both tomorrow

Yeah, it is where the line goes into the manifold, there are 2 sensors there....2 wire is for the ECU, one is for the gauge. There is also a 10MM bolt on top of the mani with a gold sticker right next to it...that bolt is for bleeding the coolant system.

On the KA, in the lower rad hose, you are thinking of the THERMOSWITCH for the fans. that sensor just kicks the fan relay when coolant temps get too high.

You only have to swap out the 1 wire sensor..right? Because that is for the gauge, but the one for the ecu stays the same I'd guess?

So to bleed the cooling system I just loosen that bolt and start the car, wait for the coolant to come out of the hole and tighten it back down? That seems easy enough.

CHECK YOUR RADIATOR. I HAD A PROB WITH MY OLD RADIATOR FOR MY 25 SWAP HAD SMALL BITS OF RADIATOR CORROSION. ALSO HAD THE SAME PROB ON MY RX7. HAD TO UPGRADE TO A NEW RADIATOR. SWAPPED MANY THERMOSTATS AND GASKETS THAT WASN'T THE PROB THO. THE CORROSION BUILT UP IN THE ENGINE CAUSING THE SYSTEM TO BUILD UP PRESSURE AND EAT THE LOWER RADIATOR HEATER HOSE. JUST AS YOU HAD THE SAME PROB COOLANT EVERYWHERE. SUCKED.

I have a brand new 2-row Koyo, so thats not it.

I actually have the overheating prob figured out, somehow I wired the inside fan as a pusher, moving air away from the engine :|

I know, Im a donkey. Its an easy fix at least. I realized this when it started heating up again, and went away once I got on the freeway.

Guess its a good excuse for driving fast for when I get pulled over :)

My R33 radiator had rust inside, and so does the coolant hoses and ports on the rb25. Is this normal from a motor sitting? I've heard so, but I've heard to cycle distilled water through the system with the drain open when I first get it started to clean it out. Does that sound right? I have already replaced the radiator with a Koyo aftermarket unit. (2.5 inch deep i think).

I had one of the coolant lines so corroded I had to replace it, its part of dealing with the beast....which is why I like to take them damn near completely apart when I install them. After the problems I had with my personal RB25, I dont want anymore issues.

Skillzilla, this is WAY off topic, but I think you live in my area.

I just started looking around for rb20det stuff because the local place around here (Augusta Customs, I saw your name on their boards) may be putting one in for me. If you had yours done there, Id like to talk to you.

Who did you end up talking to? Jay? Hes a good guy, gave me lots of info and help on my swap, even though I did it myself. A great guy in the local car community. Ya dude, theres TONS of car clubs here, pretty much one for every type of vehicle, no matter what your into. Theres a new low key drifters sect of a local club popping up soon, with some nice S-chassis's, some 8-6's, and some other rides, Ill definately hook you up on the info.

Are you perchance up at Ft. Gordon? If so LMK, that would make things easier as far as meeting up or whatever. We are all usually out on Washington on Friday nights, and sometimes Saturdays, either cruisin or chillin at Hooters or Sonic. PM me and Ill give you my cell number, we can chill and talk RB's, even let you drive my car if you want so you get an idea of what they are like.

Peace out mang, hear from you soon.

skillzilla, you dont happen to drive a grey s13 with gunmetal rims do you? If not, what color is it.

I actually live in Appling, not too far out, 10 minute drive to town. I used to bring my car up to Washington road and would go by hooters every once in a while. That is.. until my engine went, and now im in the process of getting the RB20.

Yeah, that all sounds good, how old are you by the way?

Oh, and yeah, Ive been talking to Jay about the swap. Seems like a cool guy.

Im 24, my S13 is red with the stock steelies. The other 240's I know are my other one (gunmetal with Rota knockoffs), my friend Angel's gunmetal '92, Nick's Primer Grey with the Nismo kit, and a few guys from base with Silvia front ends, one green and the other hunmetal (both coupes).

Im 24 BTW.

I've seen a red 240 like that around. I see it parked at Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts all the time.. So im assuming the guy that drives it works there. I drive a grey s13 with chrome rims, you may have seen it before. Ive seen that other grey one with gunmetal rims around quite a bit.

Here is my car: [IMG][/IMG]

I think Ive seen your car around town, and by how much I frequent Advanced and Auto Zone, that was prolly mine you saw :)

Just did the coilovers today, its on the low-low now, almost tucking the steelies. I was chillin with a few guys from Augusta Customs last night, said they remember a guy coming in for an RB a few days ago, musta been you.

Ha, cool.

I saw that car again today at Autozone, were you there today? I work right there at that Bilo, so I get to see if its there all the time. I cant wait to get the engine in my car.. I havnt been able to drive it for almost 4 months now, with all the extra power thats going to come with the engine, its going to be like a whole new car, but better.

Right now, Im looking at exhaust stuff, cause im running stock right now. So with the new engine, I am going to need to let it breathe. Jay told me Id need a catback system that would fit a stock 240. Im not trying to spend a fortune on it though. He also told me id need one other thing, Im not quite sure what he said though. Maybe a catalytic converter? would that be right?

Check these out..

and

Maybe i should post on the augusta customs forum and ask Jay.

edit- Sorry for hijacking your thread by the way :(
