A different "idle" question

On my '91 240SX (auto), my idle is around 700 normally, but it goes up and stays around 900-1000 with the A/C on. It drops back down to around 700 when I turn the A/C off. Normal?

Hi Jim,

That sounds normal to me. My '89 used to have AC in it, and it did the same thing. I just took a quick look in my FSM, and they state there is a valve/solenoid combo called the F.I.C.D solenoid valve that lets in a little extra air to bump up the idle when the air conditioner is on. That AC compressor is a real power robber when it's on, so the engine needs to run a little faster to make up for it.
