My local dealership called yesterday asking about trading in my 2009 Rogue SL with AWD and a sunroof since it still only has 24000 miles and the dealership already had someone lined up to buy it specifically. I looked at a new 2012 Rogue SV, AWD in Black with Mudflaps, Bumper protector, carpeted mats and cargo matt and after sitting down for a few hours the final deal we settled on was:
26870 Sticker for the new SV
-1370 Discount
25500 Price
-14500 Trade-in (Equity in the car)
11000 My Price (4371 Payoff on my 2009 Absorbed into this price)
-2000 Negotiated Discount
9000 Final Firm Price to be paid by me. With zero down and 0.0% APR
for 60 months including taxes, fees, etc it would be $234/month.
I wasn't planing on trading in my rogue so soon since I have taken such good care of it, and have kept it low miles, but looking at it from an investment stand point over the long term this seems more than reasonable. Any advice from you guys? Thanks for looking at my situation!

your 09 SL is going to hold more value in 5yrs than a non-leather(sv) version. your really not making out in the long run here.
people will buy a used car with more miles, and a year or two older just to get nice features. those people will walk past a mid-entry younger car for the older but fully equipped car.

i would drive your rogue until its paid off and then drive it some more as it will be payment free and saving you money. (isnt that the reason to "buy" cars versus lease?)

best of luck y friend - you got a tough choice with the 0.0%apr seeming really tasty for 5yrs.

I wouldn't do it. I would of made the dealer payoff the trade without any negative equity. The used car market is hot right now.

I just traded an '09 Rogue for that same model. I only did it soley as a business decision, I loved by '09 Rogue. I got a better model with more options for ten bucks a month less and they gave me 3K more miles a year in the deal (I lease mine). I was fully intending on buying my Rogue at the end of the lease but this deal was too good to pass up.

If had purchased the Rogue, no way I would trade it in after only 3 years. And I think you could get 20K selling that car on your own, used car prices are way up right now.

^ Twin Cities markets for mid size SUVs and compacts are in demand... Almost everyone has an suv or 4x4 truck per house hold. The Rogue is sold very well used as well as new. In most cases, the used ones areas much as the new ones.

I wanted to thank you all for the advice. I actually talked the dealership again and got them as low as 8000 but ended up passing. All of your advice made great sense. and i went as far as making a depreciation and maintenance comparison between the two, which furthered my new found convictions. I'll definitely wait, which is easy considering how much I already like 2009. Thanks again!
