1) The stock coolant temp gauge never goes above half way. Im using the KA temp sensor so the gauge reads correctly. I have a S14 rad with the FAL dual 12" fans as pullers. With the fans on and the engine temp stable, the single wire temp sensor reads about 4.0V. The engine throws off some heat and seems pretty hot, the thermostat is open. But I have no way to actually measure the coolant temp. I have also moved the temp gauge needle to make sure it wasn't stuck (I previously had the cluster apart).

Does anybody have a list of known coolant temps vs. sensor voltages?

2) When idling and just driving slow everything seems fine, but when I start putting a load on the engine (like climbing hills or driving fast) I get a real strong toxicating smell. With both windows down. The temp gauge doesn't rise at all. Radiator coolant level doesn't seem to go down. The smell kinda seems sweet, like coolant, but it really burns my throat, eyes, ect. I see no signs of leaks in the engine bay. No white smoke that I can see from exhaust. Only once I saw slight moisture on the exhaust tips after starting the engine. When I pull over or slow down the smell goes away.

Since I smell it really strong when moving it's either coming from the engine bay or my heater/vent system. Any ideas?

Thanks

How new is your swap? you might have that burning smell from residue getting burned away or random spills.

According to some of my logs, the voltage at the sensor decreases as temps go up. The 4.0V you're reading is probably "past" the sensor on the opposite side.. so probably 5-4=1V?

Here's some of my numbers:temps are in Celsius

71C = ~1.5V72C = 1.46 to 1.48V74C = 1.4 to 1.42 V81C = 1.22 to 1.24 V84C = 1.08 to 1.06V85C = 1.04 to 1.06V86C = 1.02 to 1.04V

Seems like you're in the mid to high 80s C range, which is normal... but this is all just an extrapolation of my data. Definitely get a water temp gauge so you know for sure.

for #2: maybe blow-by gasses? not sure if that is a big issue with 25's. do you have a catch can hooked up?

The swap is coming along nicely except that I'm running on 5 cylinders right now, I should get another ECU today. Other than that I'm really loving the RB motor and the way it's components are laid out, everything seems to make sense to me (unlike some Ford engines.....)

Not sure what you mean by past the sensor... I connected my multimeter to the temp gauge sensor (single wire, KA sensor). The positive lead from my meter went to the sensor directly, the negative lead when to the battery's negative terminal. At room temp the voltage was around 9V or so, then gradually decreased as temp increased.

I don't have a catch can yet....

I don't really know what blow-by gases are though.... I'll have to look it up.

EDIT: Now that I think if it.... I never smelled it until I fixed my boost leak (pretty bad leak). At first I thought it was the soapy water I spilled over the exhaust manifold/turbo, but then a day later it still smelled....

oh. don't read that one. read the voltage across the 2-wire one that goes to your ECU

Ok I measured the other sensor and got 1.14V after driving around with the fans on too... so that puts it in the 82C - 83C range, not bad.

Also, with that weird smell... it finally went away, it must of been that soapy (detergent I think) water i spilled all over.

Now I have been working on calibrating the speedometer (HUD) with the Dakota Digital... I got it like 5mph off at speeds around 50mph. Next week after I get the car on the road I'll get it accurate up to 75-80. (I'll post my settings if anybody is interested in using the Dakota Digital.

Thanks!

Ok about the smell....

When driving with my fans off (engine keeps the normal temp), after a few minutes or ripping around the whole interior cabin filled up with black smoke and that same smell......

With the fans on i barely smell it.

I pulled the car in my garage, opened the hood... no smell no smoke

Jacked up the car, no leaks what so ever anywhere... i roll down by the tail end of the transmission... i can slightly smell it, i can also slightly smell it by the transmission drain plug.... I used the black permatex (sp?) gasket maker, the kind that comes in the pressurized can to seal the drain plug and the side plug....

Any ideas? maybe i should use better transmission fluild, i think i have 80W-90 or something like that, in there now.

Thanks

Any idea on the transmission smell??

I'm going to drain the transmission fluid and replace it with a better brand... what weight oil do you recommend?

Thanks
