I just bought a 99 q45t with 123k, black on black its immaculate inside and out. While doing the new car routine (all new fluids) I noticed something odd that gets me to asking questions..

The belt driven fan has some little cracks where it mounts to the clutch.. Is this thing going to explode?? Where in the world will I find a replacement??Are the massive electric fans enough to cool the car if I just remove the damn thing till I find a replacement??

As for the timing chains.. Do I ever need to worry myself with replacing them?? I have a 98 altima with 223k and ive never touched the chains, just removed a couple guides to cure a noise issue..

And plugs.. NGK platnim.. NO BOSCH.. I hate bosch.. Correct? Thanks in advance!-Danny

1.) Yes, they can fragment while in operation and do some serious collateral damage. http://www.infinitipartsusa.com

2.) No, they are auxiliary fans for the AC condensor.

3.) With fresh oil and filter everys 3750 miles, you should be good past 250K.

4.) NGK PFRG11 in 5 or 6 heat range. 6 for the sunbelt.

Welcome to NICO and thanks for reading before posting.

Pardon me asking.. but whats the sunbelt? .. I'm a south texas boy.. San Antonio gets pretty warm, so I forget.. colder or hotter plug?

Thanks for your help.. Ill drive around like an old man (under 2k) until I fix the fan, don't want that monster coming apart under the hood..

If you baby the car id run the warmer plug range. But if you drive the car hard an/or you drive mostly highway miles (more than 20 miles per crank up average) then I'd say you can run the 6 range....

I dont think the fan will fly apart (never heard of that) but definitely replace it ASAP. I wouldnt remove it.

I dont think you'll ever have to worry about the chains. I dont even think theyll give you any rattling, the altimas used a different motor that had chain issues.

Ill more than likely just stick with the factory heat range. I don't beat on it, and the trips will mostly be short ones, around 15 minutes or so..

I don't think the fan will fly apart either, but it keeps me up at night so ill be changing it asap.

As for the altima, its got the ka24de .. Tough little bastard I tell you. There were never issues with the chain, just the guides that nissan stuck in there then issued a TSB to remove them if they made noise.. hahaha..

I hope this infinity proves to be as reliable as my altima. In all those miles ive just replaced belts, hoses, caps, rotors, wires, plugs, brake pads, filters, a few sets of tires. 1 alternator (it was noisy) , 1 tensioner(noisy) , and the radiator(It had a tiny leak).. Absolutely NOTHING broke on it. ever. Still has its original cat, exhaust and piping, cv axles, bearings, struts, tie rods - etc etc. I never changed the PCV, because you cant get to it.. seriously.. Im telling you that 3k oil changes and 10k drain and refill transmission (4qt) is what kept the car running like NEW. Still no oil consumption, shifts like a DREAM and it makes more power now than it did when I got it with 6 miles on it almost 10 years ago.. The bad though.. It only gets 20mpg in the city, which is pathetic for a 4cyl auto

My 87 300zx turbo gets 25 around town.. vg30et 5 speed I'm guessing the q wont do too much worse. but im not expecting 21 thats for sure.. I drive efficiently, so 16-17??

Thank you all for your help!Could someone report some typical gas mileage in town? (y33 owners only, I know the G50 got worse)

I get 16-20 depending on how I am driving. Highway mileage is not much better - say 23 at most. 99q45t with 114k now.

Documented fact on G50. Don't recall it occurring on a FGY33, but no reason it could not.

I run the 6 heat range, but ideal would be 5 in late fall to early spring. Basically, I have my cars set-up to survive the TX summers.

Who had a fan break in service versus during repairs?

When I replaced my K/S at 20-30K miles ago I noticed the cracks in my fan blade and did not replace it. M car currently has 232K miles.

Don't remember who it was . But flying fan blades were not kind to the coils.

Just have to read the previous posts. A lot of relevant information there.

I heard from my cousin about a guy whose girlfriend's uncle had a fan blade break and nearly cut his arm off-maybe it was his head, I can't remember.

Peter Egan (Road and Track) wrote a wonderful article about car parts that never break (anymore), included were wheels, fan blades and brakes. A must read.

well ill gladly pay the 80 some dollars now...I know that a hood, radiator and all the hoses and god knows what else the blades will destroy will cost me alot more... Everyone thats worked on a nissan knows they have a craving for blood.. So an Infiniti will want to get blood in a "vip mafia" fashion.. That means the fan will come apart and make me bleed when im checking the transmission fluid or something...
