ok so i did a rb20 swap into my 93 vert a little over a year, ive got 10,000 miles on it and i still having a idle problem.

first off, i bought the motor as a clip, i had the head resurfaced and had the machine shop check the head for cracks and check the seals, passed both test. i also disassembled the bottom end, to inspect bearings and surfaces as well as piston and cylinder wall condition, all check out good so i reassembled engine with new gasket kit and all new seals. so thats the history on the engine.

when i installed the motor i used a aftermarket front mount intercooler kit, brand new cooler, tubing and couplers with t bolt clamps. the bov is stock and is recirculated using all stock components.

so onto my problem, the motor idles at 1900-2100 when its real cold, after about a minute it will start to fluctuate idle between 1200-2100, going up and down, then after about 30seconds of that it will settle its idle at 1200, and it idles at the rpm from then on, it did this since day 1!

so far i have removed the iacv, cleaned it and reinstalled using new gasket. i have also tried to use the idle adjustment screw on it and it seems to have no affect, right now the screw is completly closed, and it still idles that way. and thats about as far as i have gotten lol.

i have been doing some searching on here and it seems as though the problem could be my timing and or tps sensor. but i dont know how im going to time the engine considering timing is supposed to be checked at idle of 650rpm, mine idles at almost double that, so how should i go about checking the timing? and checking the tps sensor seems to be a pretty confusing task, so im hoping somebody can dumb it down for me, maybe with some pictures? lol. i do have a volt tester so i think i have all tools required?

i also have a few other random questions, i just bought a digital gauge cluster, i have read that it is just a plug and play swap since i have the harness for the cluster? can anybody confirm this? also i am using the tach from my clip in my stock analog cluster right now, but i want to keep the stock 240 tach in my new digital cluster, so my question is how do i modify a stock 240sx tach to read correctly with my rb20?

and now some pics of my car for your viewing please and a thanks for reading my post, keep in mind these pictures were taking a couple days after i finished the swap, so there a little old and the car is pretty dirty, but i plan on taking some new ones when i start fixing this idle problem, so you guys have some better pics to look forward too.

thanks for your time if anybody has any info that could help i would greatly appreciate it.

I had to unplug my tps with the car running to adjust the idle. From there i set my timing and idle. timing for a manual, is 15degrees, auto is 20, I timed my car at 700RPMs.

You might have a leak on ur intake mani, its just a paper gasket so its quite common, so just spray some carb cleaner, and see if idle changes or not.

Not too sure on the cluster issues.

Clean Vert, and I hope this helps.

kind of a silly question, but did you modify the tach to work with a 6cyl?

ok so i will try unplugging my tps sensor tomorrow and see if that effects the idle. and friday im going to check the timing.

well i replaced all the gaskets when i swapped the motor, but i will try the carb cleaner check either tomorrow or friday and get back to you guys.

thanks.

OK so ive spent all damn day trying to fix this retarted idle problem and its really pissing me off, so i took a bunch of pictures today hoping somebody can help me out here to get my damn car running right.

first i unplugged my tps sensor (tried unplugging each plug seperate, as well as both at the same time) and it had little effect on the idle, maybe a 100rpms up or down.

i then tried to unplug the aac (idle control valve), and the motor idle came down to around 1000rpm, so i adjusted the idle screw a little and the lowest i could get it to idle smoothly was 800rpm, any lower and it would sputter and die. so i tried reving it up and it would not come back to a 800rpm idle, it would just rev down and die. and as soon as i plug the plug back into the aac the idle would go right back to 1200~rpm.

pic of AAC or IACV, seems to be reffered to as both

so next i tried to set my tps, from what ive read you have to unplug the the lower plug of the tps and check conntenuity to each pin in the plug, so i checked the harness side of the lower plug and the voltages of the 3 plugs were 5.3~ 2.4~ and 0.1~ and the voltages stayed the same at idle as well as WO. so i check the tps side of the same plug and the voltages were 0.0on all 3, and i checked both with key to ON, engine running at idle, and engine revved up. so i think im doing something wrong because the tps is supposed to give a voltage of 0.5 at idle and 4.5 - 5.0 at WO, if what i read is correct. so can somebody please explain to me how to set the tps, step by step!!!

pic of TPS SENSOR and UPPER and LOWER plugs

i also hooked up my timing light and checked it a few times, i kept getting different readings ranging from 10* to 20*. and i assume its because i was either doing it wrong of because the engine wouldnt idle correctly.

so after i f***ed around doing that for a few hours i decided to swap the aac and tps sensor with the spare ones i have from my blown backup motor, and guess what, it didnt change jack s***, same problem even with the new aac and tps sensor.

the only thing i noticed that didnt seem right was a vacum line leading into my throttle body, so i took it apart to see where it led and it just leads to a little hole right in front of the butterfly valve, the vaumm line runs along one of the tube hooked to the bottom of the intake piping (the one where the stock bov mounts to the intake) and i have the other end plugged, i believe this originally ran to the charcol canister but im not 100% sure

and i tried the carb cleaner spray to see if if chaged idle and it nad no effect, and i sprayed it on every gasket i could see, which make sense because ALL the gaskets are 100% new as well as my piping, couplers and intercooler.

so i am at a loss, can somebody please explain to me how to set the TPS, it would be especially helpful if you used a pic (perhaps mine)

and any other info on what could be wrong would help to.

and as promised here are some pics of my car from today

i was busy f***ing around with this crap all day so that all the pics i took, ill take some more in a day or 2
