so i was reading some old threads and saw some things i wasnt familiar with. so i searched and still didnt find anything that answered my questions. i've only got 2 and answers would be nice. 1- how do you build a CA19DET? i dont plan to, i'm just wondering what's involved with it.2- what's the difference between a 4port and 8port head? what are the pros and cons of each? how do you tell the difference?

thanks for all the help in advance.

u can build a ca19 by boring the block to 84mm instead of 83mm which still isnt exactly 1900cc its a lil lower but u get the point:)

To get a CA20DET you will probabally have to have a stroker kit. Nissan did have CA20E, but I've not heard of anyone converting it and I've heard the bottom end is weak.

4 port heads were in the UK/Europe. What it's refering to is the number of openings in the intake side of the head. Ex- A 4 port head has one port & intake runner for each CYLINDER. An 8 port head has one port & intake runner for each VALVE. Does that make sense?

the CA20DET is easily built and i have all the knowledge and the parts to do so. no, i'm not going to share either. it's going cost me some money, but it'll be well worth it.

and on the second part, that helped a little. are there any advantages or disadvantages to either?

8 for torque 4 for HP (4 big ones less restriction at top end, in the 8 port 4 of them are only open after a certain point of load/RPM/whateveritis so to increase intake velocity and torque at low RPM... ...also, in a way semi-converting the engine to 12 valve operation)

ok, so without removing the head and everything, what's an easy way to tell the difference? is there a way? thanks for all the help so far.

Well unless you got your motor from the europe/UK, you've got an 8 port. But yea, if you look closely at the intake mani, you'll see that the 4 runners break into 8 runners VERY close to the head (like 2 or 3 inches away).

well that works. based on what biosehnucht said, i prefer the 8 port design. gotta love torque. thanks for answering my questions everyone. if anyone else has any input feel free to post it.

Even easier way is to look for the SCV or swirl control valve. It is the actuator for the butterflies that open it form 4 port to an 8 port. It's a big gold cylinder on the back side of the intake manifold between the motor and the firewall.

dont worry, i'll share someday. as soon as the engine is together and i know it works properly, you'll all know about it. i'll give specs, how-to's, pictures, anything you want. give me a couple months to get the bottom end together and i'll let you all in on it. i'm half tempted to bore it out and make the displacement even higher.....hmm............

As long as you plan on sharing, Sean will retract the gay statement, right Sean? (*Makes Seans shake his head yes). Good Sean, here's a cookie. Now go outside and play like a good boy! Ofcourse if you don't Sean and I will personally seek you out, burn your car to the ground, and do things to you in your sleep that will make your mother cry and will haunt your fathers dreams for the rest of his life....

of course i'm going to share. it's just another way to show up the SR guys. increase the displacement and get more torque, gotta love it. the CA wont be seen as an underdog for long, not mine anyways.

ahh, suprises are good:) as long as it comes out eventually I'm happy! and anyone who's trying to stick it to the SR guys is OK in my book :pface

I guess you could say I tried with my high comp pistons, but didn't get the reliability I was looking for. I was able to give my CA the low end grunt the SR has with its extra displacement, but timing and detonation own3d me:(

well, i'm still not quite sure what type of plans i have yet, as far as power goes. i do know that once i get a CA20DET built, than it's on to suspension and brakes, and then back to the engine. the bottom end will be built to hell and back before it's assembled so i'll do some valvetrain work and a turbo upgrade. i dont know if i want around 300whp to drift with, or just go all out crazy with it to show everyone what the CA can do. only time will tell...

Tomei makes a kit for a CA18 to 20 deal.

Yea, if I was really wanting to get the CA some displacement, the Tomei kit would be the way I go.

Quote »Dee...i dont think that even you know how to build the CA20DET, do you?[/quote] I do, but why do you think I don't? If you knew me and knew what I did everyday, you wouldn't have said that. But to fulfill your thoughts about my abilities of building a CA20, there's no need. If I want displacement, I wouldn't even use a nissan engine. I would use a 4G63 and go from there. The CA18 and its 110 cubic inches of displacement work just fine for me. And besides that, I already have an extremely built motor just waiting for me to install. You're asking for a headache with a CA20DET, but to each his own. Do a search for pics, if wanting to see............

i agree with dee. he knows what he is doing, and the engine he has built is quite simply put: rediculous.

im anxious to see what you have in mind though, ill be waiting for news of the finished product. good luck with it!

oh, and ryan, very nice owrk 0wning sean.

Oh yeah Ryan, bought the pistons from racengineering today and they should be here tomorrow. I really didn't want to spend anymore money on this car, but oh well. The head bolts finally stretched out and my pistons are getting a dose of water, fuel and fire.

Dee, i didnt mean to offend you or anything, i just didnt think you would know how to do it. i reallize that you work with CA engines constantly and that you have one hell of an engine, i just know that hardly anyone (especially in the states) knows how to build a CA20DET. i'd still like you to email me too. [email protected] thanks.

It's cool man! I just try to stay away from headaches. I was going to put one together, but I'm really out to develop as much power as I can out of 1809ccs. I'll drop you an email in a few.........
