I've done a lot of searching and reading on here, and I've been coming across a lot of different terms that I don't understand, and I've searched the terms and gotten a better understanding, but I still don't feel like I know a damn thing...

I have a 1990 mostly stock 240 and I have been pricing SRs for a while, and after checking out a lot of people's KA-T's, I think that may be the route I'd rather take. If anyone is willing to divulge everything they know about turbo tech, what turbos are better for my car, what other stuff I'd need to buy in addition to the turbo itself, what does a MAFS do, what does a BOV do, do either one of those come with the turbo, wtf is t3/t04, etc, etc, etc... it would be GREATLY appreciated, but since I'm not a total retard, I know nobody's going to sit here and write a dissertation on all things turbo. I've done a lot of searching, but if anybody knows of any articles on NICO or elsewhere that would be helpful, that would be awesome too.

for some of the stuff you can look at http://www.howstuffworks.com/ and search for how most of the things work, as for the rest which is what turbo...etc search here:), there's a button at the top right that blinks.

i like to help noobs out but you gotta be more specific and dont just ask...can you tell me everything.

for the questions you did ask. a MAF sensor is a mass airflow sensor it measures the airflow coming in by heating the hotwire and using (electricity??) to heat back the wire which is how they determine how much air is coming in.

t3/t4 means a t3 turbine with a t4 compressor. t3 is the hotside which is usually brown, and the t4 is the coldside which is usually silver (the front). they put a t3 turbine to make it spool faster.

bov - when you release the gas pedal the throttle body closes sending the air backwards. this air can harm the turbo so you gotta let the air out, which is what the BOV does.

the "can you tell me everything" was a joke. I didn't actually expect anybody to tell me everything. I was just looking for a place that might have a lot of organized info about turbos.

I searched on here, and most of the convos about turbo are between people that are already at least somewhat knowledgable on the subject. I am not.

Everything I know about turbo came from Need for Speed Underground. hahaha

now, the mass air flow sensor, is that a pretty standard thing, or are there different mafs that offer better performance.

and i thought t3/t4 was a brand. lol

thanks for the info though... i dont mean to sound like a complete idiot, cuz i can talk NA all day long. I just have never really tinkered with any turbo cars before.

btw, howstuffworks.com is an awesome site, but i was looking for 240 specific information. I know how a turbo works, but the site doesn't really say much about different brands or stages.

its awsome you are comming here asking questions like a normal human, some newbs should take notes from u.

As for the MAF. The stock maf cannot measure higher volumes of air that some of us are running. And by higher volumes i mean pressure like say 15psi of boost. Im not sure where exactly the stock 240sx maf becomes unable to meter the air but im sure someone on here does. The 2 most popular MAF swaps for the 240sx are the Ford Cobra MAF and the nissan 300zx MAF(also known as the z32 maf, as thats the chassis code of the 90-96 model, just like s13 and s14). As for what turbo best fits the KA, that also depends on what the user wants, you usually cant go wrong with a t3/t4 with a turbine size larger than say .52 a/r.hope this helps.~Sam

Does upgrading to a better MAF give any gains by itself, or is only in conjunction with a turbo that it boosts performance?

And, I looked at some t3/t4's and are they all pretty much the same as far as how they bolt on? Or would I have to find one made especially for my model?

And thanks for the kind words... I see a lot of people that just get on here and not only act like they have never posted on a forum before, but like they've never interacted with adults period. I try not to do that. lol

i recommend getting a book about turbos and reading it. sure it doesnt sound like great fun to do, but once you start understanding stuff you want to keep reading to know more. i bought a book that i repeatedly heard people (from nico) say that you should get if you want to go turbo, and its actually very interesting and helps explain alot and gives you the information on how to pick a turbo that is right for you. ive seen alot of books out there, but i bought the one people kept recommending on here, which is Maximum Boost by Corky Bell.
