Without looking at an 05 (I have an 08xs) I'll state one of the things I did on my other car (non-Infiniti).
First off the the other car had a single exhaust that exited via a formed area in the rear bumper and I wanted to duplicate that on the other side. To do so I used a two by 4 that I shaped like the exit.
I carefully measured out the new exit using several reference points on the bottom of the bumper, the wheel wells, all sorts of points to make sure it was exactly where it should be.
Now using a floor jack I positioned the two by four in the new exit and then carefully heated up the area using a heat gun. Keep in mind that a heat gun puts out a lot of heat and can burn the paint in this area easily so you want to do this in a very controlled fashion. Warm it up, jack up while warm, let cool, repeat over and over again. If all is good you now have the new exit looking like the original. This worked well but was tricky since it was an oval.
Now I cheated for the rest since I too was going after the look and funds were limited. I used a Camaro muffler in place of the stock which allowed two outlets from one inlet and fit the stock location. With the removal of the rear resonator the sound is pretty good without being too loud. The shop tested several mufflers with me in the car. My original pick ended up putting a weird harmonic at different rpm settings, so if you go this route you may want to consider doing something along these lines for testing.
