a/c won't work

i have a 2000 nissan altima.the a/c compressor clutch only engages when the cooling fans come on,then disengages when the cooling fans go off. whats wrong?

Does the air blow cold inside the vehicle with the a/c control turned to "on"?

Yes ,butonly when the cooling fans for the radiator come on.when the fans are off,the a/c clutch won't engage.

When the fans are off, does the air begin to get warm or is it still blow cold?

I think my problem might be the thermal control amplifier mounted inside the evaporator/heater box.I've ordered another one online(BuyNissanParts.com)I'll let you know if this fixes it.

I just changed the thermal control amplifier located inside the heater/evaporator box and the a/c now works !!GREAT!!. I want to thank EVERYONE who responded to my request for help. this problem is common with nissans. it cost $35 and about 1 hr. of time.
