Well after a grueling week of driving...I was about 2 miles from the house and started smelling a burnt smell....a/c stopped putting out cold air....

got home...looked under the hood.... belts ok....

burnt smell coming from under the car.... I suspect the compressor gave out...

if that's the case...any ideas on what a new one would cost...

90 Q 155k miles....

Only A/C work...was changing out a drier probably 5 or 6 years ago....

I was hoping get another 12-16 months out of the car...so a 2k bill would put me into something cheaper and newer....

Love the car....

A remanned compressor might be found for $300 plus oil and another new dryer $80, o-rings , clutch.....a grand anyway you look at it installed.

My experience so far on the expensive scale...1. Chain guides2. Transmission (but under warranty TWICE)3. Sunroof4. Air conditioningMy advice, at that mileage, change it ALL out while you're doing it, I listened to the dealer at one point who said , you only need this or you only need that, then I was back twice to tear it all apart and that gets very expensive from a labor and recharging standpoint, see if they can save your original freon if possible and put back in, I was able to do this.

burnt smell?

I'd suggest at least the clutch is gone - that'll make the smell.

Why the clutch went out, you're right, probably seized compressor.

ever seen the inside of one of these - incredible they last more than a few years. The variable displacement design saves from the constant start-stopping of earlier designs, but 150K seems very resonable lifespan.

200-220 k if you take the time and spend the money to maintain the system.Heck my oem evaporator has 251k.........but again miles means less than hours of operation......and much of the miles were interstate at 70 mph like 3/4............on maybe 50% of time 3,000 hours at most.
