Ok, a couple things... There are two types of refrigerant, R12 and R134. R12 is the old stuff that eats a hole in the ozone layer. R134 is the more modern stuff that isn't quite as bad. Make sure you get the right type. I think you should have R134 in your system. There should be a sticker somewhere under the hood describing the A/C and type of refrigerant. If your A/C still blows a little cold, then you can simply add some refrigerant... but if you need to add refrigerant, you HAVE A LEAK somewhere and it will be a temporary fix. How temporary depends on the size of the leak. Again, if your A/C still blows a little cold, your leak probably isn't that bad. Your A/C system has two ports, a high and a low. The high side should be marked with a 'H' the low with a 'L'. The directions on the package are about right... just be sure to follow step by step.
Now, if your A/C is completely empty and does not blow cold at all, you need to get it fixed and have a professional vacuum all the air out of the system and add the refrigerant. Air in the system will significantly lessen the life of your A/C mostly due to corrosion caused by moisture and O2.
