My mistake. I meant my refrigerant level was topped. I tried to add some more in the AutoZone parking lot and the employee helping me couldn't get my car to take in any more freon. The gauge on top of the canister said that my car was full.

But it still doesn't blow cold.

Does this clear everything up?

Has you 92 Q been MIS-converted to R134a [Azone parking lot addition]?

Ohhh noo... thats right!! It should take the old R12 not the 134a. If you added 134a to a system full of R12 then theres gonna be problems. But if you're sure that it has been properly converted, then the only thing left is the HVAC controls ( I think it has a little computer in it, maybe fried )

Unfortunately, you may have to take it to an AC specialist. Will probly be $100 to $200

Kind of hard to mix refrigerants out of sheer ignorance since the hi and low pressure connections where you hook up the hoses are different. My guess is that you're looking at another compressor or have overfilled with regfrigerant. See me if you end up needing one. When doing major work such as compressor replacement, it makes sense to go ahead and convert to R134. Search my posts for info as I've done this and am enjoying the benefits.

Not only does this NOT clear everything up,but it is the perfect recipe to screw everything up-you now have no idea how much refrigerant is in the system, and if the level of refrig.{high? low? exact amount?} is contributing to your problem of inadequate cooling! proper a/c work diagnosis can only begin after getting the freon level EXACT-and the ONLY way to do that is by a proper evav/recharge-then you can rule out freon level as a factor and keep looking if necessary-----why a/c work is best left to professionals, which are not found at autozone

Ha haa ha. I prefer the occasional use of the elusive and secret "Cherokee indian A/C dance" and is more effective since chicken feet and gypsy dust are harder to find for the common Voodoo practitioner. lol

lol no it wasn't an ethnic joke, wasn't a joke at all just goofy ramblings of a sleep deprived college kid.

The mix doors are pictured below. See page 11 and 12 of the HA section of the Service Manual. I'm not sure exactly what they do, but I know they are motorized and controlled by the small computer in the A/C control panel. I think they just mix the hot and cold and incoming/recirculated air. Yours might be stuck.. Just a guess, I'm sure someone else will have a better explaination.

You can get an FSM here: http://www.phatg20.net/modules...id=62

I see you have a 1992 but the 1994 FSM will be about the same as far as Heating and Air Conditioning, and probly most things except for engine.

Currently there are more than 6 FSM on ebay......................wishing you had one vs having one only requires you spend the money or download time!

Hard copies in a large or minibook are easier to work with compared to pdf and thousands of printed pages.

I printed out the PDF file - what a pain. In retrospect, I probably would've bought it. However I do use the PDF file in conjunction some times as it's easy to search.

Yeah. I have the 94 FSM. I can really use that? Is there a reason that there's no PDF of the 92?

From what I understand, the first generation and second generation are bassically exactly the same car except the engine, hood & bumper, and some suspension differences (active? vs non active?)

Even the ECUs are interchangable (i think my NICO ECU is actually a modded first generation ECU... 93 i think)

The interior is the same I believe execpt for small things like the clock and maybe a few others (gauge cluster? / moodlighting??)

So for AC problems you should be able to use the 94 FSM just fine, but I imagine the compressor is different, or at least mounts to the engine differently, but in theory you should be able to use the 94 FSM for most work on earlier Q's.

Probly the only reason there is no FSM for first gen is nobody has actually done the hours of work to scan every page and make a PDF for it..hope this helped..

In the FSM HA section you will find an easy to perfom suite of diagnostics, primarily for the controls and sensors. If your pressures are fine, this is a good procedure to go through.

Is there any where you can get new fan brushes?

Would radio shack or IOS carry them?

Or is it just easier to get a new or confirmed working used motor and clean and adjust the brushes?

Most towns have alternator/starter/DC motor rebuilders that should be able to supply you with something. These are typically "old school" establishments downtown that are open from 8-5 M-F and close for lunch. Check the yellowpages... probably not a lot of web advertising for them.

I replaced the brushes on my Mom's 88 Maxima heater motor this way a long time ago. Looks like essentially the same design.

If a hundred components out of thousands wear and and eventually fail and the average cost is $100 each that is $10,000 for new replacement parts alone.

Over 19 years I've replaced over 215 components at more like $25,000.

Some like shocks, suspension arms, upper links, tension rods, rotors, pads, hardware kits, engine and transmission mounts, diff mounts, drive shafts, alternators, ac compressors, hoses and injectors I replaced more than once.

Everytime I used a high mile used part it has refailed after a year

Q45Tech,

If your costs was about $25,000 and assuming you did the labor, what would the average cost be for those who know sh..t and would have dealer labor charge added on?Did you buy the '90 Q new?

Yes he did. I thnk over the 18 years his costs to maintain are about $45K.

It's in one of his posts. Last 10 years have been at T-3, but he buys his time in bulk and pays for the little extras.

One thing that has occurred to me is the amount of time to clean correctly the vavle cover interface and under the plenum. I've spent about 3 hours doing that, along with removing RTV. The latter is included in the regular bid (but how well is it done? With a dental pick?), but the former certainly isn't. My engine valley looked like the Alberta tar sands and was about as hard to extract.
