a/c problem

I have a Pathfinder 99, and the a/c doesn't work. When I turn the a/c the clutch engages make a sound and after 30 seconds disengages

Anybody have an idea about what could be the problem..

i hope your compressor is not seized up, when the compressor engages, and you see the pulley spinning or no?

was the problem gradual or all of a sudden?

Yes, make a sound when engages spinning for 30 seconds and disengages and keep doing then something until the a/c is off.
