Came across this today...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35...times

I had heard of the claims of "loose floor mats" but this article shows that they seriously underestimated the fact that they had a MAJOR problem with these accelerators...

Nissan sure isn't perfect, but I haven't heard of them doing anything like this... anyone recall the conversation in "Fight Club" ... kinda scary to find out that those things happen for real!

Yeah unbelievable. What gets me is they took so long to act on all of the complaints issued about the SAME problem.

ill give toyota credit that their reliability is usually above other car companies in similar class. I know people who have / had toyotas and definet had less problems than you usually would.

With that said, I think toyota just wasn't ready for something major like this.... I mean people are dying due to these problems, I don't remember seeing a major issue of this magnitude in a long time.

Toxik, ur right... toyota is KNOWN for its reliability and quality control, that's why this is SO BIZARRE... there are a lot of folks that probably lost confidence in the Toyota brand after this... I know I have...

Correction... people are dying because they cant drive. not because the car is accelerating out of control.

I didn't know the driver of the first accident was a California Highway Patrol... that's just a shame

I'm not saying this isn't a problem, because it certainly is a huge one on Toyota's hands. What I don't get are all the people freaking out because their Camry is taking off at 100mph down the road and they don't know what to do since the brakes aren't working. How about shifting from drive to neutral!? There isn't an automatic out there that has a lock preventing it from going from drive into neutral at speed. Sure it'll rev till it hits the limiter but the wheels will stop pulling.

Yeah it's old news but unfortunately it ended in tragedy. Personally something similar happened to me but it wasn't an accelerator. Coming down a hill and towards an intersection, I did what i normally do, stepped on the clutch to down shift only this time I had no clutch or brakes. I said Holy Siht! I quickly turned off the car and stepped on the emergency brake and I was fortunate to steer the car( with no power) across 2 lanes and onto the shoulder where I proceeded to change my shorts Looking under the hood, I noticed that a plug blew out or came out from the exhaust manifold and that the extremely hot air from the motor was blowing right on both the clutch and brake line which was made of plastic which obviously melted the lines It was a very "Dangeris" situation... I know

I don't know if it was my army ranger training that helped me to think logically under pressure or what but I'm sure most folks do not have that capacity or fore thought to do what I did which happened in seconds. I hope Toyota fixes this problem which could have avoided the death a family.

I'm sure the general population who use cars to commute from A to B do not understand how transmissions work.. So if their motor is going ballastic , they would probably wrestle with the breaks to counter it.. But im sure neutral would fix the problem.. owell, their fault!

yeah but this came into the spotlight when a CHP officer died with his family in a lexus. I'm sure he knew how to drive better than your average person.

Did you say their fault??? What a phucked up insensitive analysis of someone dying!!! As Dangeris just stated, you think you know how to react in a life or death situation, until it gets there... MANY folks just panic, they aren't thinking clearly, or logically, or calmly for that matter.. someone with advanced training may react differently than someone without it... being a CHP should have given him a bit more background since I'm guessing they are trained how to drive in dangerous situations, but even still, when it happens, people clam up sometimes!

Just because you own a gun doesn't mean you have the training to know what to do and what not to do when a situation presents itself such as a burglary or break in... I can tell you that when I had to use my gun due to a burglary in 2008, my mind was rushing 300mph, and my adrenaline was through the roof, and only becuase I've had weapons training at my gun range could I overcome all of that and make rational decisions on when to fire, where to fire, kill, not kill, allow them to retreat, etc.

If you've never been in a situation where you have to think fast like that, you are in no position to judge someone else who made the wrong decision in their life or death moment... and if you have, surely you remember how fast your mind was racing...

Anyway, folks are saying this is old news... NO, the recall and the excuse of "faulty floormats" is old news, but the second recall didn't happen until 2 weeks ago, and the new news about extended congressional hearings and straight up lies on the part of Toyota covering up what REALLY was going on are new reports that all consumers should be aware of!

I meant it was old news because it was being broadcasted on every major network on main hours, everyday for the past 2 weeks. Not being hurtful to your cause, just thought It was common knowledge at this point

oh I see, man I've been in the lab or traveling, and haven't been in front of a TV in a while... so my link to the outside world right now is the internet... I remember hearing about the "loose floormats" last year, but to see how shady the execs at Toyota were about this while people were crashing and dying... it's just phucked up... not what ANY of us have come to expect from Toyota ...

they needed an image change bad, now that people won't care for them anymore they'll have more reasons to bring new exciting cars back like the supra, mr-2, ft-86 etc..
