if you were sitting in traffic and not moving, it may have shut off to allow cooler air to get to the radiator and because at high temps it can not rid itself of the heat it needs to in the condensor.

usually if the a/c shuts off and the light on the button goes out it means that the system detects a low pressure situation on the low-side line like low charge. the reason it comes back on later is that after the a/c sits off for a while the low-side pressure rises again and it will re-enable the compressor. i would say that your system is low on refrigerant and needs a service. there is a thermal sensor in the high side of the compressor but when it senses a high temp situation it just disconnects the ground to the clutch coil and shouldnt turn off the light on the ac button. in any case though you are going to need to take it to a shop that does ac work and have it checked but the diag fee alone shouldnt cost much.........

p.s. i didnt notice thay you said that it doesnt work now which would confirm my suspicion that it was low on refrigerant because it would have to be leaking to get low and would explain why it doesnt work anymore because it has probably run out completely........

i really dont use my a/c much as it is and was even considering getting rid of it... with that said how much do you suppose it runs to fix the leak...

oh, i just remebered something, one day i was actually using my a/c and went into the store and when i came out my a/c was hissing, i thought it was my tire at first, i dont know if this has anything to do with it or not

well it is hard to estimate the cost of repair without knowing the cause of the leak. some ac parts can get pretty pricey but if it is just merely a seal then it should be reasonable. a few questions that would help a little are what year model do you have and does it have r12 or r134 ? as far as just doing away with the ac it is all whatever you want, personally i love my ac and cant go without it.........

r12 and r134 are the types of refrigerant used in auto air conditioning. if it is a 90 it originally came with r12.
