Ok I have a 1997 240sx and I'm having issues with the A/C.

Story: I bought the car with none of the a/c lines hooked up, so just recently I hooked them up and added refrigerant. The a/c blows nice & cold, we also held down the tab to see if any water would come out, all the came out was a light oily substabnce (which I beleive is normal).

The problem: When ever I start the car with the A/C on, the first 5-10 mins the car is on, or when I accelerate heavily the A/C has these short spazims where it squeals very loud.

I've checked the belts (that doesnt seem the be the problem). When the A/c is off (the fan knob 1,2,3,4)I doesn't make these noises

Any info on why this is happening would be great.

Thanks

the compressor disconnects itself when it is not on. that would explain why it only occurs when you turn the A/C on.

It can be hard to tell when a belt is worn, I would just go ahead and replace it. they are not expensive.

What do you mean by disconnect? The reason I figured nothing is wrong with the belts is b/c they are only 6 months old! So I really don't think theres anything wrong with them. They were a lil loose before, so I tightend them (which helped some of the a/c squealing go away).

when you turn the ac on, an electric clutch engages the compressor to the pulley. when you have it off, it just spins freely. watch it sometime while someone turns it on and off. you will see what i mean.

OK I feel I should tell people how I solved this issue. OK this makes no sense to me, but maybe someone here can help explain . Ok my motor was shaking pretty bad, and was snapping the welds on my CAT, so I replaced my motor and transmission mounts with racing mounts from "Hardrace Performance". After installing the new motor mounts my exhaust was fine, AND MY AC STOPPED SQUEALING !!! The only thing I could think is my engine must have been moving so much that it was causing the belts to skip and squeal. I personally didn't think it moved that much, but I guess I was wrong, b/c now the motor doesn't move at all and the acceleration is amazing .
