My A/C turns on for 5 seconds then turns off. 5 seconds later it turns on and repeats this. What is wrong?

Thank you

Your a/c system is low on refrigerant it has too be charged with Refrigerant thats why your a/c system engages the clutch and disengages the clutch because of the need of refrigerant your a/c system needs.

^^^^^^^^I agree. Also, check your AC fan. If the fan is not working the refrigerant will get to hot and the pump kick off and on. usually only have to worry about this in slow moving traffic though.

The A/C fan does not have nothing to do with the clutch engaging on and disengaging off the compressor!

If the ****ing freon gets to hot it will cause the compressor to shutdown.i.e. if the fans not working it could happen. I know this ****.

Edit. Also, learn proper english and stop using double negatives. It makes you sound like an egnoramous.

O.K. first off, He didn't say anything about the clutch engaging and disengaging the compressor. He just said it was cutting in and out. which means that, like you said, its low of refrigerant or the pressure is to high.

Maaayybe........ The pressure is reaching to high of a level and causing the compressor to shutdown. Now, what is the cause of high pressure? HEAT!!!! This means that the AC fan may not be working and is allowing the refrigerant to get to hot. However, this will not happen immediatly. The AC will have to be on for a while with no airflow for it to get this hot. But it is a possibilty.Educate yourself before you tell someone they are wrong. Oh and btw, I am a professional. If you still think i am wrong go ask another prof. and see for yourself.

Oh yeah, i also forgot to mention the orfices could be clogged on the evaporater causing low pressure on the suction side of the compresor. The filter dryer could also be clogged. If any amount of moisture gets in the lines it will cause them to be clogged.

It's probably just under pressure limits and as the compressor turns on, the pressure drops so the system cuts back off. Then, as the pressure builds, the compresor kicks back on. If you still have R-12, you'll need to take it to a shop to have it charged or convert it to 134-A yourself, which I recommend. It's pretty easy to do. Of course, if it something else that janda240sx listed, you'll need to take it to a shop anyway.

i think janda is right. seems like the high side is building up to bad fan. Best way to check it put a fan to it and see if it drops on ur high side gauge but a clogged orfice tube could be also. I'm leaning more to the fan. have someone look at the fan when u turn off ur car and if it keeps spinning after the car is off then u got a bad clutch fan. should only sping like 1 or twice. touching the high and low side lines can help from the orfice tube to the compressor to the drier and such...
