I am going to have the A/C recharged next week. But I need to know, does it hurt to have it retrofitted to R134? I was told by one shop that because of auto climate control, and pressure sensors, it may be bad for the A/C system.

Thanks-Jesda

Do a search on R134 and you'll see why it's a bad thing.

The main problem with EVEN properly done conversions is even after you have spent serious money to replace the compressor, the dryer, rewired the pressure sensors, and installed a different type condenser, the system STILL doesn't cool as well with R134a.

Sure R12 is $40-$50 per pound [need 2.4 pounds] vs a few dollars for R134a.

Spending $2,000 [on AC repairs] is to be expected on an old lux car when it goes over 120-150,000 miles.

I have converted to 134a in my 91., with noticably less performance in cooling .Was going to convert back to R12 this summer (sadly now that car is no more:()Yes teh R134a is cheaper it would take years of leaks and refill to break even with a conversion.

As for teh cheapo conversion ($150-200), they just dont work no matter what teh Pep Boys man says (yes I speak from personal experience) :doh

Fred..:)

"Spending $2,000 [on AC repairs] is to be expected on an old lux car when it goes over 120-150,000 miles."

BUT IT doesn't have to be as preventative maintenance on AC from day one can extend the time to failure out to beyond 200-230,000 miles.

My oem compressor and condenser made 230k but I changed the dryers multiple times and reoiled and flushed the system a few times...........cost maybe $600 to almost double the typical life.............you pay early, you pay now, or you pay later.

My evaporator is as built back in 1989........248k. So another $1,000 repair will occur sometime, hopefully never.

I converted my 88 chevy pu to freeze12 and adjusted the pressure sensor to turn down the temp and it ended up being just as cold. However, I don't think that the Q has this adjustment.

"converted my 88 chevy pu to freeze12"......But one has to decide if he feels safe having a hydrocarbon like butane or propane inside their AC system.

Not a good idea if you smoke or have an accident.http://www.epa.gov/ozone/snap/....html

My '94 Q has 134a in it. I keep it set at 72 degrees year-round. When I get in my '00 I30, I keep it set at 77 degrees. Both are 134a, and both pump out cold air, but I guess the difference is in the computer.

Prevention and service is the key.
