I would check your refrigerant levels... There are several conditions that have to be met for the ECU to allow the compressor to be on. The evaporator can't be freezing (per sensor), the compressor can't be too hot (per a sensor onboard), the refrigerant pressure can't be too high, and it can't be too low. There is a dual pressure switch on the receiver dryer... at least on my 1997. I would download your FSM (Factory Service Manual) at
http://www.phatg20.net to read up on the diagnostic procedures. I think it's there. You'll need to google for the freeware to decompress the .rar file you download - then you'll have a nice .pdf copy.
I had to replace the evaporator on my 97 truck, so I spent a lot of time reading that stuff.
