A/C always on by default

Tried googling this, but didn't find anything. When I start my car the a/c is always on and I have to turn it off. Is this a defect or just a setting I have to change? Once I turn it off it doesn't come on by itself, just after the car is turned off and then restarted.

If you have the air flow control in either of the two defrost settings, the compressor will come on when you start the car, although as you say, you can turn it back off (at least through the 2008 model). The compressor will also come on when you move it from any other position to one of the two defrost settings.

So, either keep the air on the floor or dash when you turn it on, or continue to turn the A/C off after you start up.
