i have a 6mt 2.5 a/c, my question is when im in neutral and try to move into first the stick will not go in place. it feels like trying to go into reverse with out the ring engaged. its blocked or just wont go. however if i pull the stick back to 2nd, engage the cluth, then move into 1st, theres no problem. this also does not occur while downshifting, just occurs from neutral. ive learned to drive it with no problem, but i was wondering if any one else knows of this?

I don't know about you but yeah sometimes it happens but i always thought it happened occasionally with all MT cars. It feels as if the its dropping right onto the point of the gear? i always thought that's what happened but i'm really just guessing. I usually just move the car barely then it pops right into first.

my 2.5 didnt go into first like u said.

i used the 2nd gear to first trick.

It only happens if i was moving. If i was stopped it goes rite in to first.

Now that i have 10000 miles on my coupe this issue has loosened up.

It seems the transmission is broken in and isnt so tight. Or i just figured out how to get it in first easyier.

I don't know that I've ever really had a problem getting into first. My last car gave me fits trying to get it into first, so maybe the Altima isn't noticeable comparatively for me. Also, I generally launch in second gear any way (unless I'm trying to take off), so first doesn't get used too much.

When you downshift do you clear in through 2nd when you slow down? or do you just put it in neutral and coast to a stop?

It could be a problem with the way that your transmission is lined-up. This happened to my brother's mustang a while ago - every m/t car is different than another of the same model. Sometimes the factory doesn't line up the transmission with the shifter plate and it causes issues for you to put it in certian gears - for my brother, it was reverse and somtimes 5th was funky. Take it to your dealer and explain what's going on.

it depends, if im approaching a turn or slowing down for speed bumbs ill downshift through gears. but if im coming to a light or i know ill be at a dead stop i will just put in neatural and coast. mostly coast however, and if im moving i really dont expierance any problem.

if it doesnt go in at a stop i just quickly put it back into neutral and then back into first. i dont know why it does that either but just put it back to neutral and try again. always works for me

Mine does the same thing.. it did it in my old MT too.. it only does it when i have a hard stop or while im still moving a little bit. i'm pretty sure its a safety feature so you dont blow your gear out in case your moving too fast for it.. it will do the same thing if you try and shift into reverse while your moving froward. makes sense when you think about it tho cause ive accidentially shifted into the wrong gear and my RPMs just shot up..lol

THis is a well knkown issue with this transmission. You've already figured it out: shift inot second, then into first. This "clears the gear" and provides better alignmnet(dumb, but true) so that it will then shift smoothly into first.

Its kindof agravating, but Im so used to it now its just part of how I drive it, dont even think about it anymore.

I dont think its just this transmission... i used to have a 93 325i with a 5MT that did the same thing... thats why im thinkin its a safety feature.
