I have a 1999 Infinity QX4 that I have a few questions about. First off it is more of a spare vehicle more than a daily driver... So about a month ago on the way home from work and pulling out from a blind intersection (took the short route home) I had to drop the accelerator to the floor to flow with traffic. On the first shift I lost oil pressure, oil light came on, and the engine started knocking. I was about ½ of a mile from the house so I backed off of it and babied it home. I let it set for about 30 min and went back to start it back up. It had a horrible knock on startup that lasted for about 5 sec then went away. Since that day I have not driven the truck over a couple hundred yards at a time and it still has the knock on startup. Once the engine has been started and the initial knock clears up you can only hear a slight ticking right before the transmission changes gears. If you kill the engine and start it back up you don’t get the initial knocking only when it attempts to change gears. My question is what has happened and how do I get it fixed.

Sorry for the long post

Nathan

Have you checked the oil level? How long has the oil been in service? What oil and filter are you using?

thanks for the Welcome and i have already really enjoyed the "tech pages"

i was due an oil change when it happed was probably somewhere around 4500 & 5000 on that oil change. I had already purchased the oil and filter before it happened just had neglected to change it. a day or so after it had happened i changed the oil and filter. i used a havoline 10w40 oil just not sure which filter i went with. i do think that i am due for a tune up from the distributor cap to the plugs. with a timing light on the front left cyl i get an erratic flash... seems to me that it might be missing alittle.?.

Sounds like failed valve or rocker arm to me but yor comments that the oil light came on leads to thought that you possibly have all sorts damage inside the engine.

Usualy the oil pump works better at higher RPM making more pressure but it is possible under strain a failed pump can stall.

My thoughts are this is no longer a truck I would drive no futher than I am comfortable walking home from. The cost to pull the engine and do a complete rebuild might be more than just getting a salvage yard one installed if you cant rebuild it yourself.
