I was inspecting the distributor cap out of curiosity and found a lot of powdery substance. Prior to doing so, the van was running good. As I continue to cleaning(just wiping the powdery thing off with a lint free towel) the distributor cap, I decided to remove the whole distributor to inspect it. Now my mistake is not marking the position of the rotor. I only marked the distributor hold down bolt position. There was no dirt inside the distributor itself.
Before removing the distributor I also mistakenly did not set the engine to #1 TDC
So to fix the mistake,
I tried to get back the proper position of the rotor by making #1cylinder to TDC on compression stroke. I made sure it was the compression stroke by removing #1 sparkplug and by putting a cork in the hole and turned the engine until the cork popped out. After doing so, I checked the timing marks on the pulley and aligned it to TDC(the first line from the left of the pulley marks). I then placed the distributor so that the rotor is on the #1 firing position.
Now the van won't even start. I need help. Is there a proper way of placing the distributor if I messed up by not marking the rotor?
