To anticipate another question, the A/C compressor is running anytime the climate control is in "Auto" mode or set to Defrost. Even though you wouldn't think you'd be running the A/C in Cincy this time of year, the car does it to keep the humidity down and keep the windows from fogging up. I think it's probably better for the compressor seals anyway...
If you want to turn the compressor off completely, you need to select the "ECON" mode.
