My head unit had some of buttons loose/missin as well as intermitten skipping problem in CD olayer. So I got a head unit out of 99 Q45. First I thought it wouldn't work different number of receptacles. I plugged eveything in and - it works just fine.

Cool, I got one of those to swap into my 94, but choose one with less "shiney face".

Any benefit from the 99' versus the 97'. How many miles on your 97 that your had the problem? I'm at 82k and the buttons are all still nice and firm.

Nothing, looks different. Old HU was neglected by previous owner. I found some crap inside of HU that should have never been there as well as inside of center console when I took it apart. Apparently previous owner liked crackers or cookies a lot Cheers!

Thought I'd dig up an old thread and add a bit to it.

Be mindful that the ground for the radio is through the case and so the radio will not work until it is installed-ask how long it took me to figure that out!!

LOL. This is nice to know that it will work. But once my oem cd player burns out, I will purchase an cd/dvd double din player....AGAIN! I had the single din cd/dvd player but some bastard wanted it more that I... If I would have seen the punks, my 9mm would have had the case of the "hiccups"!!

Not long on the clock but much too long for the gumption that I'd budgeted for the job!!

I got home a bit early and thought, "Well let me throw this radio in real quick"- yeah right. Because it was different plug configuration I didn't want to put the radio in and THEN find out the junkyard unit was defective.

So.... its in my lap all plugged up and nothing. Then I after monkeying around I plugged the old one back in-in my lap-and..... nothing. It was funny because my wife came to ask how it was going and I said that the old radio didn't work now and she thought that this was horrible news but this confirmed the error was mine. I reread the FSM and the same sentence which I'd ignored earlier in the trouble shooting section suddenly made sense- "Radio case ground is defective."
