I've got the 99 almost ready to go and after reading about Bose stereos/amp/speaker and their low impedance I have a question.

Infinity makes a component speaker set that is 2 ohm which is close (Ive read) to the stock speaker impedance. I really like Infinity speakers and am curious if I will see an improvement that makes it worthwhile.

Will the aftermarket speakers have less volume being 2 ohm and driven by a 1 ohm amp?

Will I lose the balance the factory system has? Can I adjust the fade to compensate?

I'm planning on adding a sub to the car but would like tighter bass up front along with clearer highs-though the stock system does sound good.

Any help appreciated.

Speakers are speced at db SPL at some distance [usually 1 meter] with 1 watt input at some frequency [usually 1kHz] and the spec sheet presents half a dozen other parameters to help design suitable enclosures.

The problem with Class D amplifiers is they need more parameters than voice coil [1 vs 2 ohm] resistance to assure a correct match.

Thanks for that site, its very informative.

Now, the stock speakers are between .5 and 2 ohms I've read and that the ohm rating changes as a result of input. So, will 2 ohm aftermarket speakers work well? I know that they will play and that they won't tax the amp (if anything make it last longer i would think). I also know that theoritically the new speakers should have less output-but how much?

Has anyone done this swap? Does sound quality improve?

Are you keeping stock head unit? If so,best sound quality can be obtained by adding a interface{small box} that adapts head unit output signal to standard levels and install a 4 channel amplifier and any 4 speakers you choose. There are many such Bose interface adaptors available in quality car stereo shoppes or on the net.

Yes, but once again those boxes/harnesses don't track frequency response uniformly across voltage inputs. If you are not changing the whole system out, best to stay with the spcifically designed drivers and amplifiers.

The choice is either the Infinity Component set or completely stock.

The Infinity components are 2 ohm and should work better than most, I'm just curious if they will improve the sound enough to justify their cost.

Personally, I think the FGY33 Bose is pretty good, a little better than the G50 Bose.

Changing drivers won't improve the system's accuracy, which to me is what is important. Doesn't matter how loud it is if it is imbalanced across frequency response or distorted.
