Hell all. I'm new to the forum, looking for a little guidance. I have a 99 Q-45 w/ 150k miles. Owned for 8 years. Two years ago the power steering started acting up. It had a loud whining sound when cranking the wheel, especially on colder mornings. My independent mechanics replaced the power steering pump using OEM Infiniti parts. Less than a year later, the same thing started happening again & over a period of a couple of months progressively got worse. Since the part was less than a year old, I swapped it out at my local Infinity dealership & had another new OEM pump installed. Well, as I'm sure you guessed, its happening again.

The odds of 2 new pumps going out in the past 2 years with the same symptoms seems remote. I'm hoping there is some other cause that is leading to the problems & I can point my mechanics in that direction. Any advice?

Thanks for your time, its greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Neal

:welcome: to NICO Neal!

It sounds like air getting into the system somewhere, or fluid starvation for some reason. Has the steering rack been checked for leaks or other issues?

I don't believe so, but I need to verify with the mechanic.

I ran across the following in a search of the forum for Power Steering problems & it looks like there are a lot of other possibilities to consider for this problem: Any additional input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Historically [over a few thousand Q45 serviced] the pump is the last thing to fail. Idler bearings and belts fail before flex hoses, then hardline crimp adapters/transistions leak, rack seals, and the last thing is a pump..........unless the PS fluid was allowed to become brown and full of wear metal grinding down the pump blades [rare].
