I just replaced the rear brake pads and rear rotors on my 99 maxima. The brakes were working fine after I replaced the first set of brake pads and rotor. For the second wheel, I could not turn/retract the brake pad piston so I had to drain some oil. I topped up the brake oil after installing the rotor and pads. Now, the brakes don't seem to work properly. The brake pedal feels like there is little or no resistance. The brake works only when I push the brake pedal all the way down. I have tested it at very low speeds only.

Please advise what could be wrong here. Thanks

Did you bleed the lines afterward? Sounds like you have air in it.

Sounds like you need to bleed the brakes. First, did you open the bleeder valve when you backed out the piston? If not, you may have damaged the piston.2nd You need to get a friend, jack up and secure the car on jack stands, then start the car. Have your friend step on the brake and hold it. Then you open the bleeder valve. Close the bleeder valve, then your friend lets up on the brake pedal. Have him pump the brakes, then press and hold to floor, while you open valve... repeat until you get clean fluid. Check the reservoir often, to make sure that it stays full. Also, start with the rear passengers side, then rear drivers, then front passengers, then front drivers side. Working from the farthest wheel from the master cylinder, to the nearest.

What ^^ said. Of course, real men don't use jack stands, they just crawl under the car and get fluid all over them
