99 Infiniti I30

Recently purchased this car and have had starting problems with it. First it has intermittant problems in either the ignition or transmission safety switch since when turning the key it doesn't even click. Then if trying for a while it will start. Thought at first it was security but light goes out when key is on. Haven't figured that one out yet. Battery went dead one day and I got a jump and took to have battery checked. They weren't able to do battery test in car but did alternator and it was putting out 13.8 v. Now battery is totally dead and won't stay running after jump starting it. Have it on charger and not sure if it is going to charge. Could I have a short or possibly has alternator gone out?
