Hi I'm new here and had a couple questions that I hope someone can help with. My trans has a problem and I'm not sure what it is, I have been told a couple things. I lost all gears forward and reverse, but I can start it and can get it to go into gear within a couple of seconds. I can move a few feet, (I haven't tried very far) and then it stops motion. I can sit with my foot on the brake and it will loose gear. like it goes into neutral. Then I have no gears. Its an automatic. I was told it was the torque converter and I was told it was the pump. I just don't know. I am not a trans mech. so I have to rely on others. Any ideas? also if it is the pump can it be replaced or am I looking at another trans. Also if I have to replace what years and trans from what will fit. Will an 02 xterra fit. I am lost here.

your trans is likely toast. Time for rebuild or replacement. You need a 99-04 unit.

Yes. You do need to have a V6 trans behind a V6 motor though, so watch for that. Also, the tail housing in a 4x4 is different than a 2wd.

I know it needs a v6 trans. can the tail housing be changed or is that more work then worth it. Also I read somewhere that the tcm may need replaced on the replacement trans if its from like a 02 or one of the new ones. Thinking if thats needed I would change out with the bad trans if possible. This is the first nissan I've owned since the 80s and I can work on engines just not trans. Always learning though. Thank you for responding.
