Hey guys - nothing major but since I'm logged in I'm gonna throw this out there.

I have a 99.5 with 160k miles on it...maintained like a dream...all fluids Amsoil, all OEM parts and anything that has been replaced has been OEM. Timing belt current, just did drive belts, plugs, distr. cap, wires etc.

My Pathy vibrates a little bit when stopped at a red light...it could just be that I'm used to our other car but the weird thing is that when I put it in neutral (which should stop any vibration at all) the vibration is a little worse--it almost feels like it's going to stall or something but never does. Great throttle response; I have tried cleaning the MAF and IAC valve but still hasn't helped -- anybody have any other suggestions?

Hey I am sorry. I re read your post. I read that "I have not cleaned my IAC...."

You said you "Have"

My mistake. So when I said you answered your own ?, I was meaning to do those things.

But I don't know the answer. Low idle? Trans? Sorry.

maybe timing is off or wire not seated on plug? I don't have this engine, but if any happened around this work, that might be a place. I would look at distr. cap, rotor, and plug wiring. More speculation on my part.I don't know the 3.3 but some do like fueler.

checked wires just to be sure and i know the plugs can't be the issue b/c i used the straight from the dealer NGK iridiums - never had a problem with those, but timing is interesting thought - is that something an aspiring do it yourself-er can handle? i did the plugs and belts myself -- is setting the timing much more complicated/difficult?

Easier!A timing light is ideal. There is a hold down clamp that keeps the distrib.assembly from moving,

it is usually a fork type affair that goes over the base to lock it down to block. Mark your spot because if that turns, you want to know where to go back to.

You have your rotor that turns and each time it points to the cylinder with the wire you get spark as you know.

So you got to determine rotation. Then you go against that rotation to advance, with it to retard. Slight turns, not like 90 degrees or anything. Then carefully lock down the nut to keep it in that spot.

Generally, you can turn it and it gets rough or speeds up depending. Timing light is the part you need. There is a way to do it without it, but I probably should recommend it. PLus the computer stuff I do not know.

In the old days, you just advance a bit, drive, no ping ? then go a little more. then ping, go back a tad. I never understood why a timing light was needed on old cars that had so much slop anyway. Just behind the ping was all.

But find a friend with one or buy, and you connect it to the wire, aim it like a gun at the marks on the crank pulley that turns all the belts, and look at the numbers.

This is not hard at all, but maybe pathys have some special this and that. Some of the members got to know.

I don't know the 3.3 as I said. But timing is not major hard at all. Plus better mileage. And once you got it, you can to it to all your cars forever.

Harbor Freight is the poor mans way. But you dont get name brand for sure. Plugs are harder.Get a little more advice on this particular model. Or maybe FSM

Yeah, what Issac said.

But...

I do know our engines can advance retard the timing on their own, which is why we have a knock sensor, so the engine can adjust itself. So I'm not sure the old way of turning the dizzy is exactly the way to go.

Probably fueler can chime in as he's had a lot more experience with these engines than I have.

Edit:

Checked the FSM. You do use a timing light, though there are a couple of other steps involved, has to do with the ECM. I would download the FSM if you dont' ahve it already and follow the instructions. Not hard, but should help you out if it's a timing issue. If you don't have the FSM, just search on here and you'll find the addy. It's http://www.phat20g.com or something like that.

hahah nah, i dont know how to use a timing light. But I watched my mechanic use one when he did my timing belt.

the website for manuals is http://www.phatg20.net/ On my honda, its just a matter of loosening the distributor and twisting it, one way retards the timing and the other way advances, But you dont even know for sure if its the timing. I once had a similar engine vibration problem and it turned out one of my Bosch plugs had gone bad prematurely and was not firing. I got a check engine light within 15 minutes of the vibration though. If you just had timing belt service done recently, i'd go back to the same mechanic and explain that it started vibrating after the service

If youre past the warranty period, scratch that idea

timing belt was done at 121k - it has 163k on it now. honestly the effect is so faint that it's probably just me not used to the way it feels compared to my wife's highlander 4cyl. i often switch driving between the two and that's probably all it is.

other than that i love it - never had a nissan before this one and i bought it at 153k miles and this has been hands down the best car i've owned so far. i love the way it feels to drive; i love the power it has; it feels solid and it's been very reliable. i have new parent syndrome - my car has a slight cough and i think it's the black plague - that's probably it.
