99.5 QX4 clunked in 3rd gear. Grinding sound in park. Still shifts gears

Two weeks ago I heard two loud bangs in 3rd gear coming up a hill. The "trans" makes grinding noises in park and at slow speeds loudest in park. Still shifts through the gears. Trans fluid doesn't smell burnt and is still pinkish(@170k+ miles). It had been slipping under partial throttle into second previous to this, I think the slip is a TPS issue, unrelated. Any thoughts? I am thinking torque converter.
