Does the 99-01 driver and passenger seats have side airbags? Physically looking at them, I don't see the airbags mounted on the side whereas with the 97-98 models, they are clearly mounted on the side of the seats. I would like to purchase those seats from a member here but I won't sacrifice safety.

The answer is yes. The 99-01 seats have the airbags under the seat covers while the 97-98 models had an indentation that allowed the airbag to be replaced without damaging the seat cover. If you buy a set of 99-01 seats, just hope you don't blow those bags or you will be out not only the airbags, but the seat covers as well.

I know because I bought a set of seats from an anniversary edition (2000) Q and peeled back the upper covers to make sure the side bags had not been tampered with or replaced.

Good luck.

Ted

p.s. I still have a set of both side air bags I removed from my 98 seats including the mounting bezels. If you need just the bags, let me know.

Very early 97 models do not have the side airbags, dont know when they switched.

Ted is right about the airbag mounting, my 97 has a separate pocket and my 99 is hidden under the seat cover.

Andy is correct. The '97 did not come with the side airbags. So, only the 98 model has the side air bags that are "detachable" from the upper seat.

BTW Andy, do you still have the ivory pearl hood from your '97 parts car? I am looking for one that I can just bolt on. Doesn't have to be perfect, but let me know either way.

Thanks,

Ted

Thanks for the replies. I don't understand how Infiniti design team made each design worse as the car got newer???? I was pissed about hearing all the options the 96 models had and they took all of them away on the 97-98 models. My 98 air bags are still in place but the thin outside layer is opposite of the airbags are peeling on both seats! That's why I'm looking for new seats.

So Infiniti thought that it was best to take away the 98 airbag option and use the option of hiding it under the seat so if you hit something, you will have to replace the whole freaking seat!?! Well if the seats that I'm looking to purchase doesn't have airbags, I will just take my car to an upholstery shop and let them fix it. I'm not putting my/passenger safety on the line for seats that don't have airbags.

I honestly don't know which part you are referring to. Are you talking about the plastic trim piece that goes between the side airbag and the leather seat material? I have those trim pieces if you need them. They remove easily with a few screws. Let me know if you just need these trim pieces or if your side airbags themselves are peeling. I have both in excellent shape in beige/tan.

I'm speaking about the vinyl outside part of the lumbar. The only real leather part of the seat this the butt and back rest. Then you have the two outter strips of vinyl for the outside of the seat. Well the side that is peeling is the outter that face the passenger and the vice versa on the passenger seat. The vinyl thats adjacent with the airbags are good.
