The key for my 98 Sentra GXE automatic won't turn the ignition switch without positioning the key just right and trying it several times. The key appears to be a rather rough cut store copy version. I'm thinking a factory key of better quality and cut might be worth a try first. Can I get a new key from the dealer with the VIN number and if that does not help, Can I get just a new key barrel and new set of keys? If so, what's the steps to removing just the barrel and replacing it? Thanks, Larry

In the ignition or the door?

Yes, its the ignition, Sorry about that.I don't need the electrical part of the switch or the entire switch itself , just the key tumbler barrel part and new key to go with it I suppose.

It's probably due to the fact that the key is new and the pins inside the ignition are worn. The key, being so new, doesn't let the pins line up correctly so you have to fiddle with the key to get the pins to fall into place. Does the key work fine in the doors and trunk?

I have not noticed any issues with opening the door or trunk. One of the smaller ridges on the key has a flat area that covers about 1/2 of its width. I assume that may be the area its hitting as you first insert the key and turn it. Will the dealer sell just the barrel and new keys?

I suggest getting the Key code and getting a new key punched at the dealer first. ( NOT copied)You will need the VIN and proof of ownership plus Driver license.

Had the same problem with my 10 year old Maxima. Key would stick once in a while but then the ignition just wouldnt turn. I sprayed the inside of the barrel with wd40 and its fine.

If you can find a good local locksmith, they can usually help. I'm not a fan of WD40 for anything except breaking rusted parts loose - but my local locksmith swears it works best on wafer locks like they used in the early Q45. If you don't have a factory key, getting a new one made at the dealership by the VIN is a good idea. I have also been told that having a key ring that's very heavy will wear a lock quickly.
