98 QX4 over heating in traffic.

Radiator is full. No leaks. Cooling fan kicks on. Car cools back down with higher speeds.

My first thought is the water pump. Is there something else I need check?

Sounds like your fan clutch is out! When this happens your car will over heat when idoling but will not while at higher RPM's or when you are driving. Start with the basics first... radiator cap, thermostat ect... Though a fan clutch is usually an easy fix as well. Hope this helps!

Also at the bottom of your water pump you will have a drip hole. it is a very small hole. If that area is wet or leaking water then your water pump is no good!
