'98 QX4 anomalies

Hi, I'm a newbie here and I have a kinda bizarre (to me) occurrence. My engine runs fine however suddenly my odometer, tachometer and temp gauge stops functioning. Sometimes they zero out and start back up, sometimes they stick then jump to whatever they should be reading and then on top of that my digital odometer fades in and out so that it cannot be read at all. I have no idea where to even consider the problem to be and I, being a uninformed non-mechanic woman, don't want to be scammed by a greedy mechanic. (Thankfully not all are that way.) Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated! BTW ol' girl has 237K+ miles on her and still runs pretty dang good considering!
