I normally don't do much with transmissions but the shop I used to send stuff to closed recently and there is basically no-one left in town that I can work with.

I am working on a 1998 Q45.

The car started making a squealing/whinning noise from just below the shifter nob a few weeks ago.

Now this morning, the transmission is quiting after just a few minutes (sometimes just a few feet). No weird noises, no weird jerking or stopping or anything of the sort...it just gives up)

I had flushed this car back in May with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF

The level of ATF on the dipstick is fine, the color is fine, no weird smell or texture.

If it had seized then I would at least have some direction but in this case I am clueless, I have to admit.

If you have a scanner that can check the TCM , I would make sure that the voltages for the valve bodies are correct. How many miles were on it when you flushed it? If it was over 130k and it had never been done before, there's your problem.
