Can anyone tell me how to clean my MAF on my 98 pathfinder? My path is idling rough and stalling at times. It is much worse on hot days then cold days. If I give it gas and idle around 1200 rpms it runs great. I had new plugs put in and the injectors cleaned about 8 months ago but I am having the problem again.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Steve

Welcome to NICO!!

All you have to do is take the MAF off.. youll do that by taking it off the airbox (4 bolts) and by undoing the electrical connector. Get some brake parts cleaner (or MAF cleaner, its all pretty much the same stuff) and spray it down, but dont get it real close to the element. A fine mist will do it just, just enough to get it wet. Let it dry for a few mins (10 to be safe), and reinstall... really really easy...

however, dont necessarily plan that will fix your problems, you may want to start looking around for new (used) MAFs

Thanks, I will try that this weekend. My car is idling rough and sometimes stalling. If I keep it revd to about 1k rpm it is fine. I had the injectors cleaned and plugs replaced about 8 months ago and it is doing it again. I was told the MAF could be causing this problem. The wires, cap, and rotor were not changed at the last service. I am thinking that might help as well. The car runs strong as long as it is not idling.

If you have any other suggestions they are greatly appreciated.

I bought an aerosal can of cleaner yesterday called "Electra-Cleaner". It said on the can to clean electrical parts and leave no residue with quick dry. Is this the right stuff? The guys at the part store were not much help. They did not have anything labeled MAF cleaner.

Thanks,

I have taken the MAF out and cleaned it with the electra cleaner. It has helped a good bit. The car did not stall this morning. It still is a little rough. Every 30sec or so it just chokes a little. It feels like a bump. It is hard to explain.

I definitely had better perfomance out of the car. Any ideas what would keep it still being a little rough? Would that be the cap/rotor and wires? The plugs have already been replaced and the injectors cleaned.

thanks,

thanks,
let me ask is the idle unstable (the RPMs fluctuate), or are the RPMs steady but it shakes??? That will make a difference and i can recommend from there.

Today it is more of a shake. The rpm's moved just barely when it happened. Before cleaning the MAF when it shook the rpm's would drop 2-300rpms.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all of your help!!!!!

certainly doing the cap, rotor, and plugwires wont make anything worse, but i cant say that it would help anything, but it very wellmight. Its not expensive and its not hard to do, so i say go for it.

if it still does it you may be looking at an injector related issue.
