I own a 98 Maxima SE with about 150K miles on it. It is a 5spd Manual.

I have been having some trouble during a cold start and I am hoping someone can help point out the problem.

Usually only happens during a cold start. I will attempt to turn the car over and instead I get this loud grinding noise. The car wont start. I will then have to disengage the key and try again. Sometimes I have to disengage and re-engage the key a handful of times. I do apply some throttle but I dont know whether or not that makes a difference. The key element is the grinding noise.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Where is the noise coming from, the engine bay or the steering column?

If it's the engine bay, I would suspect the starter.

If it's in the steering column. Do you have any "play" in your lock cylinder? Could be a bad ignition cylinder, though, I haven't heard of this particular problem with a Maxima before. You can take the trim housing off the steering column by removing a couple screws on the underside of the column. You may try starting the car with the trim cover removed to see if you can pinpoint the noise more specifically.

Your starter is probably getting hung up. You can get one from autozone (or any auto store) that carries a lifetime warranty. I can't remember how much I paid for mine, but (I believe) it was under $100.

It's easy to install also. Remove the air intake tubing, and the starter sits right on top of the transmission, only two bolts holding it in. Remove the electrical connections, undo the bolts, and remove. Reverse to install.
