98 Maxima Engine

i have a 98 maxima and today i went to turn it on and it made some wierd noise, like a tractor, my dad says it is the engine, does anyone have any tips, and if i do need a new engine what would be my best bet?

Can you be more specific?

It can be very hard to diagnose noises without hearing them in person.Anything else you can tell us about it?
